Keep in mind you have to learn actual words too (often two or more kanji)

I know plenty compounds ones, and I was able to devise the reading because I already knew some japanese words like onaji before learning the kanji, so when I learned the actual kanji I knew the kanji itself only read as ona and they then add the ji hiragana for the actual written form.

I do find it interesting that the kanjis have a full word meaning but in actual practice the kanji is just a syllable and hiragana completes the full word.

Also, I did chuckle at the persona references :v

kanji was a mainstay in my party, dude tanked the shit out of peeps.

should you not know many because IIRC kanjis ARE the Chinese characters, japanese just combine them with hiragana and read them a bit differently.
