Really depends on the bill, doesn't it? That might be true for recurring expenses, but you also have single-incidence bills.

I used to work in accounts receivables for an industrial electric supply co. and we'd hear all kinds of crazy excuses from customers..Here are some of the better ones i've heard.

1. My car is on fire right now. Gotta go
2. My mother emptied my bank account and left the country
3. I'm stuck in London, England.. Not sure when I'll get back, but I'll send the money then.

This happened to me recently.

I get most of my bills through email, including the electric. Usually, I’ll leave them unread until I’m ready to pay them. This way, I always have the little notification/indicator that I have unread email. Got the most recent electric bill and it was double the usual amount. Must’ve opened the prior months bill and forgot to mark it unread. Oops.
