i've never beaten mario 64. i remember having it as a kid and getting a few stars in and all my n64 games getting destroyed in a tragic accident. i've never played sunshine, i've never played galaxy beyond the first hour or so of the first one

and i'd like to play them all before odyssey

anyway, got to mario wings to the sky and i figure i'm supposed to get the center coin of all those coins in the sky but for some reason i can't see the furthest one due to a quirk in this emulator and after 10 tries i gave up and suicided on the chain chomp

It's recommended you unlock the wing cap (red blocks) before getting that star. Also, not seeing the last coin at a distance is not really a glitch... keep in mind that this game is over 20 years old now. >_>

there's definitely something weird about the coins in this emulator, just from my own memories of getting this star without issues with the cannon and without the wing cap

that said, i'm moving on. going to play some in a little bit here.

Out of curiosity, kind of controller are you using? I don't really like my DS4 for N64 emulation because the stick just doesn't feel like the N64 stick. I've tried adjusting the dead zone and stuff but I can't get the right feel

Also, do you play many 3D platformers? Doesn't seem like your forte but I could be totally wrong. It'll be interesting to see you playing the genre as it progresses. And I mean that literally-- each new Super Mario 3D release is responsible for any major changes that happened with 3D platforming genre.

i've beaten 3D Land and 3D World already actually! i feel Land is one of the most overlooked games ever

and for people who asked about my experience with 3D platformers, i played some mario 64, some banjo kazooie, some voodo vince, some donkey kong 64, some crash bandicoot but to my knowledge i only ever beat one crash bandicoot game and the aforementioned 3D Land and 3D World

i have a hat in time coming out soon, along with odyssey and i still need to get to yooka-laylee. so my life is 3D platformers for the next while

trying that level through the big star door where you fall through a trap door and i get 7 coins every time and then just walk off the edge when i expect mario to turn around. i don't really get the way turning works. sometimes i'm stopped completely and i'll press the stick behind me and i'll just walk forward at an angle and fall off. other times, i just turn around.

then i ran around, found a scary sand area, died, found a scary black hole, died and then i went to the underwater place in the main area

found my way into a cave and found some treasure chests and i guess i guessed them in the correct order because i got a star right away

I feel like this happens a lot to me. I never committed them to memory because my instinct is almost always correct. Which you could argue is because I did memorize it, but it doesn't feel conscious!

Also, I know this isn't the right place to talk about it necessarily, but Super Mario 64 DS is one of the best Mario games ever specifically because of the badass minigames. Those games were amazing, so much fun, and utilized the touch screen in an incredible way. I don't understand why Nintendo never expanded upon those games and made a full on Mario themed highscore based minigame collection.
