If you had to choose between being a passenger in a vehicle with a random person or a self-driving car, which would you pick?

Situation: you are being driven to a location approximately an hour's drive away. Half the drive will be undertaken in a congested city during rush hour, the other half in the countryside.

The person you have the option of driving with is randomly selected from the city's population. They are guaranteed to have a driver's license (though they may have demerits or other infractions on their record) and are familiar with the vehicle they are driving and how to get to the destination. There are no other guarantees on who you get.

The self-driving car is a prototype that has been through testing, but has not yet entered mass production. The company that owns the prototype has scouted the route and stated that they did not encounter anything that they believe would be beyond the car's capacity to safely navigate (poorly marked roads, etc.); however, the car has never driven this route before and there are no manual overrides in the car.

That's not even guaranteed with Uber lol. There are rental car companies that specifically are renting day-to-day to Uber drivers and an Uber driver can easily be pulled miles away into an unfamiliar area.

Umm, currently not so much.

I'll take a person for now. Long term self driving will obviously be the safer option, but they aren't there yet.

That one thing that worries me about self-driving taxis is how badly they'll be trashed by assholes without a driver to tell them to gtfo.

All they have to do is give the self driving taxis to right the "eliminate" people who screw with them.

i'd still probably take a stoned person over self driving. drunk ehhh, i'd have to know the person as i've rode with a drunk person once who drove better than some people i've rode with sober. funny part is said drunk guy didn't even have a license and not from losing it, he just had never gotten one. and i'm not saying he drove better cause he was drunk as he does drive better sober. just that he does drive better than a few people i've rode with that where sober and had a license

I'd imagine...

-Taxi's have internal, and external C.C.T.V (monitored live)
-Upon requesting the taxi during the phone call the customer has to agree to all Terms and Conditions.
-The customer booking the taxi has to register their location and destination with the taxi firm.
-During booking the person has to pre-pay for the travel.

-During the trip the customer is responsible for anyone else that gets in the taxi with them, and become liable for any/all damages they cause.
-If any passenger does damage the vehicle in anyway they're charged for any repair/cleaning costs which will be charged to the payment method used to book the taxi upon completion of said repair/clean Which would be outlined in any T&C the passenger agreed to during the phone call. (Full T&C available on the taxi firm's website) ignorance to not reviewing the T&Cs isn't/won't be an adequate defence to not pay for any repairs/cleaning that may be required.

Yeah I'm sure they'd have an easy time identifying the culprits, but that wouldn't help me if I was literally the next one in the car unless they pulled it out of service.

What would the human driver do in this scenario? I don't really get this argument, since it's not like people tend to be calm under stressful situations. The machine does its best to minimize loss, meanwhile a human driver might panic and get everyone hurt/killed. It would be unfortunate if such an extraordinary circumstance caused you to lose your life, but it's not like a human in the same situation is guaranteed to fair better.

Yeah, I don't really think it'll work out, driverless is a nice idea, but with the amount of shitty people that exist it won't. The only way I could see it working is if there's someone stationed in the 'drivers seat' but that would really make the whole point of self driving pointless.

tbh, that's the other advantage of a human driver... granted, sometimes you just don't want to talk a boring stranger.

Which is the big reason why I'll always hesitate when it comes to smart cars, especially because it might swerve to decide to save two idiots who ran out into the middle of the road and, because there are two of them, I wind up dying for their stupidity.

That said, a completely automated roadway would be safer except for idiot jaywalkers.
