I never understood the Sinbad thing.

Your instinct is to recall it as Berenstein because that would be the more Germanic spelling of the name and your whole life you've been exposed to "stein", but the family that wrote it was actually descended from eastern European Jews and in at least Ukrainian and Russian, those names tend to take the "-ain" (like "stain") sound instead of "-ein" (as in "fine") sound.
