FINAL BOSS SAMUS RETURNS SPOILERS


Ridley. Also 80/80

Hear me out- Metroid is seeing its revival, on the 3DS in Samus Returns, and on Switch in Prime 4. SR is getting pretty solid reviews, and Ridley, the series antagonist, serves as the final boss.

He was not even remotely in the original on the Gameboy, and they added him in as an extremely memorable cinematic final boss, further cementing his role as series antagonist. But the biggest piece of evidence for me was in the most recent Nintendo Direct, where during the Samus Returns segment, the announcer said that "fans of both Metroid and Smash Brothers" should pay attention. It's immediately followed up by the Ridley cameo tease, with his cry heard.

Finally though, Nintendo seems to be entering an era of listening to the fans, producing a console that's so player-friendly, taking devs' concerns into account, and just generally listening. I feel like they may finally be taking heed of the Ridley clamoring that's been going on for well over ten years.


I know it's a meme (a really old one at that) but I really am confident Ridley will finally make his appearance in Smash. What do y'all think?

You can chalk that up to NES limitations. He was given a much bigger size in the GBA remake.

Eh, throwaway line just referencing that Samus is in Smash. At most talking about the possibilities for a moveset revamp, or that Smash 5 will use the SR designs for her.

The Smash Bros fanbase is idiotically smug when it comes to their reasoning on which characters can or cannot be in the game. So as much as I love taking the piss on people saying "Ridley will definitely be in this time!", I would be even happier if he was. >_>

I mean, I wouldn't mind if Ridley is ever picked to be in Smash (unlike with most of the Smash fanbase, there hasn't been a character inclusion that I have hated), but Sakurai at least has made it clear where he stands on Ridley. Yeah, his mind could change (as seen with the Miis and Villager), but he's had three opportunities after the original Smash to include him (though Melee is an arguable case), and he didn't, so...

I agree. Ridley is top preference. Dark Samus is lowest.

As much as I love Ridley, he should be a henchman and Mother Brain should be the primary antagonist. It's how Gunpei Yokoi envisioned it and it's what works best for the story.

I don't look at that xenomorphic pteranodon and see a leader. I see the villainous henchman and physical rival.

That said, Ridley in Smash would be great. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Well, she is a brain.

That is the area of primary importance when it comes to leadership.

Besides, she's got a crazy second form in Super Metroid. Ridley could fly away to escape, but he couldn't survive the hyper beam if he tried to fight her head on.
