But they were not tolerant that the Christians didn't recognize their own polytheistic Gods, or the emperor as a god himself.

Huh. Kudos to the Christians for sticking to their faith even if that got them persecuted <_<. I wouldn't have done the same.

So when they weren't crucifying or feeding you to lions they were cool with you.

it's the same reason they oppressed the Jews so much. The Jews were a weird anomaly for Rome. When they took over a land they would make everyone pay token lip service to Jupiter and the Emperor. 9 times out of 10 people were like "k whatever". then they met the Jews and it made the Romans pull out their hair with frustration. the Jews were the only people who refused to allow for multiple gods in their belief system

the feeding to lions is a myth. most of the stories about Romans mistreating Christians are myths. they were not as oppressed as legends claim.

I'm reading The Rise of Christianity section in my Medieval European textbook and I found it interesting.

That is all <_<.

I think you had a chance to denounce your faith.

But most Christians didn't, and being a martyr spread Christianity further.

Most people did it in the comfort of their home. but that in itself was a problem because people thought it was cultist and they questioned why they weren't making public sacrifices to their God.

The Jews were oppressed more because of their own actions than because of their religious beliefs. The Romans more or less had a policy of accommodation with the Jews and they mostly respected their ancient tradition (while the Christian beliefs seemed newer and therefore less entitled to respect). Most of the oppression the Jews suffered, at least relative to every other population conquered by the Romans, was because there was always a significant bloc among them that found rule by polytheists intolerable. This caused the Jews to riot over and over, because the Roman authorities usually backed down when the Jewish population became excited over a religious controversy:
