- something girlish considered cross dressing?

I always found this double standard baffling tbh.

Androgyny is when you can't tell if someone is a boy or a girl. A girl getting a short haircut and not wearing makeup and wearing men's clothes might make it hard for you to tell her gender. But an average bearded guy wearing a dress just looks like a guy wearing a dress. So that's not androgyny, that's cross dressing.

Maybe androgynous wasn't the correct term idk.

But do you get where I'm coming from?

Essentially the levels of freedom women have to play around with styles generally considered for the opposite gender and it's considered somewhat unremarkable.
Yet if a guy whacks on a something considered for the opposite gender, it's seen vastly different.

Not all girls that wear guy clothes some off as androgynous. They can still look like girls. Regardless, society has no problem with girls wearing guy clothes, but if guys wear girls' clothes, that's a problem.

I don't know it is a problem tbh.

Some stuff girls wear looks pretty cool and I don't think wearing it should make anyone suddenly 'gay' or whatever.
Sartorial freedom is the next barrier imo.

yes, the gender role box relating to attire is far tighter for men than it is for women.

I think it's overdue an overhaul and a lot more open mindedness tbh.

Gender pigeon holing isn't freedom.

mens' gender roles have always been about fucking women. women are not going to change what they find attractive/not attractive.

The difference is that girls can actually look good in men's clothes a lot of the time. :v Especially a tailored pantsuit. Guys don't normally look good in women's clothes. They don't have the figure for it.

I guess really thin guys might be able to pull it off though. :v but even then the hairy legs might ruin it.

Women don't neccesarily dress purely on the basis for attracting guys.

So flip that around and consider why it should be an issue.

I just think theres too much judgement im essentially how much worth people place in nothing more than material and how it's been cut/worn etc.

men generally do. and society expects them to.

this is the nature of being the 'pursuing' sex. gender roles become less flexible.

But isn't this a recent -ish social construct?
Look at the fashions worn in previous times and heck, look at the 1970s style of men's fashion.
The lines were so blurred as to be practically indistinguishable. Yet plenty of men and women plenty still fucked lol.

It's an interesting debate. I can't say I totally agree with @Darkman124 here when he says "i doubt it will get one", because we're already seeing a sort of homogenising across the gender gap, it's just more obvious to see and appreciate the female examples than the male ones.

All men, all trendy. Probably more trendy in Europe mind you.

We're seeing men wearing long flowing cardigans, skirts, high heeled boots. None of this is exactly new either.

I think there's a lot of blurring of the lines going on that is becoming more universally acceptable.

I think something to consider is imagine a woman wearing something that was cut for a man, like a man's suit. It wouldn't just look tomboyish anymore, it would look like a woman wearing a man's costume.

Part of all this is because for so long men's fashion has been built around fairly rigid rules, whereas women's fashion has always been more liberated. That's probably why it seems more natural for women to crossdress, but I think it's changing rapidly.

we're seeing this...on the runway.

i don't think that's a 1:1 parallel with what we see widespread as accepted attire. runway often features things not meant to be sold in stores

It's true that runway's feature all kinds of weird shit, but truthfully a lot of what I posted is fairly ordinary now in Europe. I mean there's an entire look (The SLP look) that was super popular like 10 years ago in France and the UK that's actually just considered basic as fuck now, and it's entirely androgynous. This is SLP:

We're also seeing it in high street shops like Zara, although I think the examples I posted are definitely more commonplace in somewhere like London than they would be in most of America.

These conversations can be interesting for me because I find if I'm speaking to americans about fashion the standards are very very different. For example I notice that the overwhelming opinion on rolling your pants so high your socks/ankles are visible is very negative in America, and yet I was in London last week and you actually feel completely out of place if you're not doing that.

I have seen a load of guys doing the socks/ankle thing. Yes, it is actually rather common in Europe.

Tbh, what I'm getting at is that it's somewhat of a shame that male fashion is trapped in a small box compared against the much larger sized box that the opposite gender has to pick from.

Variety is the spice of life, and to deny an array of style options based primarily on what society 'expects' is rather bizarre imo.

It's like the whole colours thing as well. Like oh, you don't want to wear it in that colour unless you want to seem 'gay' etc. It's peculiar imo, yet many people seem to have these closed minded opinions. How did fashion become so pigeon holed, and why is it so commonly accepted as right?
