I never understood why Jill just couldn't walk through the "waterfall" (and that's a generous term for what I'm explaining...) in the courtyard that lead to the underground area. Like, god forbid you get your hair wet Jill. We'll just risk your life instead by switching batteries with cerberus' on your ass.

In the REmake they addressed this by making it more like a water-fall and applying more pressure and hiding the tunnel far better.

But in the original...it's like...walking through a shower spray. Why didn't they make that acid at least?

Probably just the limitations of the time. Just assume it was always meant to be a high-pressure waterfall.
