At the one that I work at, you essentially log in to a unique client during your shift (or whenever, but you're less likely to get sessions when floating unscheduled and you don't get paid for just being logged in if you aren't scheduled) and if you get a request, you get a popup notification that gives you 15 seconds to accept or reject the initial request. If you accept, you can see what type of problem the student has. I tutor in English, Social Studies, Psychology, and Technology, so there's a pretty wide range of issues that I run into. If you accept the request at that point, you're taken into what is essentially a live chatroom with a student, which includes a Whiteboard that both parties can write on, and the ability to share files in realtime so they can see any work you do on them. Something like that is very helpful in English sessions which tend to include a lot of proofreading, so you can highlight issues that you run into and discuss them with a student.
