After searching 20 years for Mr Right to come along Laura Mesi found the answer staring her in the face herself. So the 40-year-old fitness instructor arranged a bizarre ceremony in Lissone, in the Italian region of Lombardy, where she married herself in a distinctly one-off ceremony.

Laura had always dreamed, reports local media, of a huge, fairytale wedding in front of family and friends. So dressed in a traditional wedding gown, with a retinue of bridesmaids and a special ring she wed herself.

'If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future I'll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him. This is my fairytale wedding only without a Prince Charming.'

After the ceremony carried out by wedding celebrant Ramiro Humberto Romero Laura cut the cake, decorated with just a bride on the top tier. Guests toasted the happy single with personally bottled champagne with a label saying 'Single.'

The wedding has gained a huge following on social media where Laura has shared more than 120 photos of her big day under the title 'Laura Mesi Sposa Single', or 'Laura Mesi Single Bride.'

She declared: 'Love yourself before anyone else.'

She paid for the £8,700 ceremony herself, The happy single bride went on honeymoon to Egypt
