Current Events > The Exorcist is more of a spiritual drama than a horror film, to be honest.

When you think about it, the movie boils down to crisis of faith and facing your demons, literally and figuratively.

I've never actually seen this one but the few clips I've seen definitely felt more like a suspense/thriller film to me.

It has extreme supernatural elements, with intense graphic scenes. It's a horror movie.

There's no thriller elements at all. The only time it's arguably suspenseful is during the exorcism itself, which is the third act. Everything before that is purely spiritual drama.

It's a horror movie, but the first half of it starts out a suspense film/family drama. Then it quickly shifts to a full blown horror film, the shift is also what makes it so damn scary.

Anyway, yeah I agree TC, it's about rediscovering ones faith/hope. It's also about the bond and love between mothers and their children (Chris and Regan, Karras and his mother).

I hate how the definition of a horror movie for modern audiences has shifted from spooky, supernatural dramas to dumb movies with fake out jump scares.

A loud noise in the dark isn't scary. A girl losing her mind and identity to a demon? Horrifying.
