In general, the people who want their freedom are going to be the good guys. Otherwise they wouldn't be fighting to get away from whatever or whoever they're trying to get away from.

Catalonia is a semi autonomous bit in Spain. Has its own unique culture and language.

Loads of people up there want independence. Spain doesn't want them to because its pretty rich and reasons.

Catalonia goes ahead with a referendum even though legally they aren't allowed.

Spain goes all "fuck this ain't happening" and lays the smack down.

whar side you take depends on if you think that Catalonia should be allowed to hold a referendum without Spain approving it. Kinda like if Texas wanted to leave without clearing it with the rest of the states.

I gotta say, short of just murdering all the people voting, the Spanish government could not possibly be handling this in a worse manner.

The legality of the vote is irrelevant when you consider the Spanish government is violently supressing its own citizens who are non-violently voicing their displeasure. That's on par with the rule of a Dictator.

But should part of a country just be able to break off and form its own government?

If it's in the constitution then yes.

In this case it isn't, but again, a government is literally violently supressing its own people. That's not supposed to happen in a democracy.
