Maybe they think getting you a game or something similar will help take the pain away a little for you. Sometimes people don't know the right thing to do but at least they are trying and it sounds like these gifts are things you would enjoy. Doing something like this also makes them feel good. I'm sure they don't feel you owe them anything in return. They just don't know another way to help you/connect with you, or show you that they care.
