Low is like Chrono Trigger and Cross and high is like Final Fantasy X.

The extremes of each I guess would be Paper Mario for low numbers and Disgaea for high numbers.

High, so long as it doesn't start high.

FFX was perfect in this regard. You start out doing like 8 damage per hit. And by end game you're doing 99,999.

This feels really good.

Honestly though, I don't mind either one.

In general, I prefer smaller numbers. There's something about only doing like 10 damage at the beginning and seeing your character reach 4-digit numbers over the course of the game that I really like.

they're much easier to reason about and also don't leave room for the developers to put random small amounts of damage variance in every single attack

low.

Makes mental math much easier when there's mechanics to calculate. Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy Tactics are amazing in these regards.

Low as in the damage is capped at 999 and the stats barely hits a hundred?

Disgaea high is ridiculous, lol, I remember something like 999,999 damage.

There's been a trophy in every disgaea game since 3 for dealing over a hundred million damage in a single attack. And d3 also had the ten billion damage man trophy. Self explanatory.

The damage cap that was talked about in the double jump strategy guide (so without dlc available) was like 184 quadrillion.

I remember part of the advertising for Disgaea was being able to hit enemies for millions and millions of damage.

Prior to that I think the highest I'd seen was just over a million in Legend of Legaia.

Anyways, I like mid to high levels. Gives more room for character improvement.

depends on the gameplay type.

for WRPGs i prefer low to medium/moderate(highest being in the hundreds for base damage or DPS, at least).

for JRPGs, i don't really mind high numbers.

but it kind of kills me once numbers get absurdly high. you could cut everybody's damage and health down to 10% of what it was and still have the same game, fundamentally, in some games. <_<

Did RS change up the damage calculation again?

EoC multiplied damage, healing, and HP by 100. So hitting thousands is the norm now.

07 scape still had the old calculations. Though it has become it's own game, with unique content additions.

Agree with this. Chrono Trigger does it just fine for me.

But when I look at a game like Diablo 3 (which I do enjoy playing) and have a main stat over 10k and hit criticals for several billion points of damage it just feels unimpressive really.

I prefer games where hitting double or triple digit damage values is a significant damage milestone, when you are starting out at dealing 1 or single digit damage, over damage bloat in the tens of thousands or more. Those higher numbers serve no functional purpose except to make you feel like you're stronger. Like, in Paper Mario, if you hit something for 10 damage, you are way the fuck overpowered, and hitting for over 100 damage in like FF Tactics is high. I kind of draw a line at 9999 damage limits, and 99999 for "damage limit breaks" of sorts. More than that, and it's pretty much unnecessary.

Bravely Default is in a weird case where its "damage limit break" is 100x higher than its normal damage limit (999,999) rather than 10x of most kinds of damage limit breaks (99,999) but outside of min-maxing buffs, you aren't going to reliably pulls those insanely high kinds of numbers, so it's more just there for overflow beyond 99,999.

I play D&D, which generally keeps numbers low because they're designed to be tracked on paper. Prismatic Wall, the biggest damage effect in 5e, averages 175 damage if the victim is pushed through and fails all its saves. This is considered an absolutely devastating amount of damage, one-shotting nearly any player character (even max-level ones that aren't barbarians) and most non-legendary monsters.

You actually cannot hit 999,999 damage without doing a bunch of stupid shit like activating special attack buffs, lowering enemy defense to 0, and then attacking both an elemental weakness and a monster species weakness at the same time, while critting and using a bunch of other character buffs.

It's mostly for summon number dick measuring contests. A solid 100k hit that I can use on anything any time is much better than 999,999 damage that does 20k if used on something normal.

I like low numbers because they're easier to quantify. I mean, the numbers are all relative in the context of the game, but executing attacks that do 22k damage when a boss has 780k HP seems like a useless slog and unnecessary number padding to me.
