Well, it's between that and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. But my point is OS2 was just a blip I wasn't gung-ho on buying right away or this year at all. It was gifted to me, I started it, and...I didn't stop until I was done. It's the Uncharted 2 to Uncharted 1. The Baldur's Gate 2 to Baldur's Gate. The Borderlands 2 to Borderlands. You get it.

Though if you're digging the Divinity/BD/Divinity 2 lore with Lucian and Damien, OS2 takes it out back, gives it the bird, then beats it to death. Larian basically tossed out the lore from the main Divinity games and rebooted the world. Part of me hates them for it, the other part of me likes what they did with the story and lore of OS2. I loved where the story was going with Divinity 2, and all I needed was for Divinity 3 to happen and close everything up. A part of me is always going to be sad that that's extremely likely never going to happen now. Arhu isn't even a fucking cat anymore. Getting riled up again so I'll move on.

I rocked my created Shadowblade, who focused on Scoundrel/Aero. Fane was Necro/Hydro. Red Prince was full Warfare and destroyed shit with sword and shield. Lohse was Summoner/Pyro. There's a great variety of builds you can do, pushed along with the fact that you can go to your ship and change your stats any time you want, for free. I mostly abused that for persuading someone for a conversation.

Combat can take a while, as it's turn-based and relies pretty heavily on strategy, especially for higher difficulties. Each encounter was satisfying, however. On Classic, enemies weren't pushovers but they also didn't steamroll me. If they did, I changed what I was doing, how I was starting the encounter, how the field was, etc. etc. Except for the burning witch, fuck that bitch.

The dialogue is typical Larian's mix of seriousness and lighthearted, which I've always been pretty fond of. The maps are beautifully done and there's a shitload to explore. I did my best to find everything and even then, I'm 100% sure I missed stuff still. Replayability is out the wazoo between different party makeups and gameplay paths you can take. OST is charming with their new composer (R.I.P. Kirill Pokrovsky) with some standout tracks. I'd say my biggest gripe, apart from the lore thing mentioned above, is the half-assed romance. I loved Fane a bunch, he liked me, we had that romance scene at the end of Act 2, but that's basically where it all goes. A romance scene midway through. There wasn't any fulfilling conclusion at all, despite, at the end, us both wanting to travel some more. It basically ended with a "k bye!" I admit to reloading about ten times, trying different dialogues with him, trying to get him to come with me.

Anyway yeah, game is fantastic in general. I do miss persuading people on games, talking about the games, and between the quality of this one and it being part of the barely breathing CRPG genre, I had to come and plug it.

I imagine the battle system would the most overwhelming thing, if anything at all. I suggest starting on Classic and if you want an easier time after that, you can lower it down at any time to Explorer.

You can start here if you'd like. There are references to the others and a few returning characters, but nothing more than "Woo I know what they just referenced!" for previous fans. If you're on the fence and want to give it a go in a cheaper way, there's always the first Original Sin. Or hell, even Divine Divinity, which is $6 or under a $1 when on sale. DD has a different combat system, it's action, and much easier to cheese if you want to. It's also way easier overall after you get past the tutorial dungeon (which is oddly challenging).

Huh, whatdya know lol. And I've played Ever Oasis. Pretty charming and addictive game. Sadly I couldn't continue with it at the time due to my 3DS L Trigger being broken, so my system was gone for a month. By the time I got it back I was craving my Story of Seasons more than anything else. >_>

Don't forget Divinity 2 which was the most overlooked and underrated RPG in forever.

Not Beyond Divinity, though. Divinity 2 is a separate game and is technically Divinity 3 but numbers just don't mean anything anymore.

Very true. BD and D2 are more story relevant, though one can easily read up a summary on wiki. It shouldn't be a long read, and can even be summed up with a "There's this Divine guy, he couldn't kill this baby. Get it? Got it? Good." Divinity 2 gameplay is fucking awesome, though. Was actually my first Divinity game, then I backtracked and played DD.

does OS2 have the problem of OS1 in which by mid-late game you can just spam the massive damage AoE powers to oneshot battles

because that got kinda boring for me. oath->rain of arrows->next battle

also the puzzles/traps in that game were shit.

I don't think so, but maybe it was the classes I used. Certain skills made shit easier, like a high level Summoner (good gawd that Incarnate).

Also yeah, the puzzles are easy breezy in OS2, as well.

you can blow up less than 50% of doors that have hidden buttons required to open them

the worst offender being the immaculate cathedral basement but the endgame area also qualifies

burning church wasnt as bad, but it was still pointless and slow. its main criticism was the meteor swarm drop at the outset of combat, which was cheesy AF and best responded to with stinkier cheese.

Yeah, I've been playing the hell out of this game. I'm doing a "good" playthrough right now and am in Act 4. I've tried to do every sidequest I could. Once I beat it I'll probably jump straight into an evil lone wolf run. The replayability of this game is off the charts. It's probably the best entry to the genre since Baldur's Gate II.

I also want to play Battle Chasers Nightwar (worst title ever, I know). That game looks really solid.

I need a CRPG break, I played no game but OS2 and I put 100 hours into it in a stupidly short period of time, haha. need to replay Pillars at some point as well, before Deadfire comes out next year.

What anime games? I only know of Ys, Danganronpa, and Chaos;Child if VN is your thing. I'm gearing up for Mario Odyssey, myself.

Have you been keeping up with Compile Heart's new game, Death End Re;Quest? I'm not a fan of their fanservice and satire games (Neptunia), but I really freaking loved Fairy Fencer F while Dark Rose Valkyria and Omega Quintet were pretty decent. Re;Quest seems to be more along those lines.
