how do you guys feel about deadspin?

in general they do have some good writers and content, but there's so much BS.

I looked up the best way to wash a hockey helmet, and after sifting through like 5 shit ones, I found a deadspin shit one. I clicked on it because usually they at least sometimes know what they're talking about.

Article title: Your Hockey Gear Is Foul. Clean It, Or Else.
I copied + pasted the many stupidass filler deadspin style words into word. it took 1031 words until they got to the actual information. Which included really cool phrases that 12 year old patriots fans would probably think is cool: I can picture those of you who actually play the game now, beating your chest and bellowing: "THAT SMELL is part of hockey! THAT SMELL makes me awesome! What kind of Ugg-wearing Tom Brady-wannabe dandy-boy washes his pads? WHO ARE YOU, WOMAN, AND WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU ON DEADSPIN??"

"bacteria come out to party like drunken permatanned girls on the Jersey Shore in August."

"The thing is about that bacteriathey aren't picky. That bacteria may want Pauly D. with all his dark, hot, moisture, but they'll settle for the cut-rate version (I've named him Sauly E.), even though he lacks heat."

and throughout the actual information there was still a lot of filler

I didn't mean to rant on deadspin tonight, but most of their articles are full of this stupid stuff

I don't know. On one hand I think they kinda suck in a lot of ways, but on the other I think they're probably the best source of sportswriting out there because sportswriting is in general really bad. And I agree with their politics so I don't get angry about that stuff like so many Facebook commenters do. That is really weird to me btw. Deadspin is extremely political and makes no apologies for it but people still act surprised and mad about it all the time.

I agree with this, specifically the "[one of] the best sources of sportswriting out there." I don't read enough of it to comment on their politics, but a lot of it has too much edgy filler crap.

Some of it is great, and the only site that immediately post a video or something that other sites wouldn't post because of offensive content or something.

And I do like Drew Magary a lot, even though he he has a lot of filler/humor/edgy stuff, though his writing as actually good

and I love his yearly Why Your Team Sucks articles, specifically for the vikings and the packers

Eh, I don't know if I'd say Deadspin is one of the best sources for sportswriting. They are just smaller in comparison to a site like ESPN, so it's easier to get a picture of their good content. ESPN and other major sites have good writers, but they're in a bigger sea and there are also many very bad ones.

One of my biggest complaints is that their coverage of major events is kind of arbitrary. Sometimes they won't write a single article about a recent game, but sometimes they have two or three. The bigger sites have a more reliable spread of coverage, but that also leads to an unnecessary amount of analysis.

I do enjoy when they shit all over the media hype for guys like Jeter and Ortiz (and general blind idolatry of athletes). Sadly, even the best people on mainstream sports sites/networks seem to indulge those tendencies.

This is typically the case with a lot of their articles from Adequate Man, and it is kind of hit or miss. See all of their Foodspin articles, for example (although I genuinely enjoy some of the filler for Foodspin articles).

Anyways, you can guess my opinion of Deadspin. I did buy Magary's last book, after all.

I haven't read anything on that site in part because I feel like it's about to go under any second now. It just feels like something that's going to be profiled as a noble failure by deadspin in 15 months. Also I really just don't read that much sports writing. Deadspin keeps me up to date on goings on in non baseball sports and for baseball I read fangraphs sometimes

The Wild beat writer (who is very very good and easily the best sports writer I've followed in my short time) was recently hired by the Athletic and quit his longtime newspaper gig because of it. I was going to try out a subscription, but I didn't and now that the season has started, I won't get a subscription because it feels like nothing has changed. He still tweets and stuff, but I don't need to pay for a long article about how the Staal brothers were raised.

I do think it's a good direction for sports journalism tho.

same, and I agree. I might do the free trial within the next month or two

I wondered the same thing...how could it get profit? A couple months after he was hired, the wild writer (Michael Russo) tweeted that something like 50k people subscribed to the Athletic in the Twin Cities market. If they all paid $30 for the year, that's 1.5 mil. And that's just for the Wild. If they can do that in other markets, I can see how they have enough money to hire the best writers and stay in business

I don't have a source, but I'm pretty sure the netflix/steam model has decreased piracy by quite a lot. I barely do it anymore because it's easy enough/cheap enough to get it legally. Maybe it can work for journalism too. Either way I'm interested to see how it works for the Athletic

what a crazy rule. why didn't the blue team have a guy back to catch the punt? is that a formation rule in the cfl or something?

If you have a punter who can kick it really high and a crazy athletic gunner like cordarrelle patterson, I wonder if that would be a legit strategy to go for an onside punt every time

also, slurpee, how popular is the CFL in canada?
