Meant to make this topic a few days ago, but just now finally getting to it.

I like keeping up with SNL, and I think there are other fans here too, so figured I might as well have a weeklyish discussion about it.

Thoughts on Ryan Gosling and his complete lack of ability to maintain a straight face during literally any sketch?

Is the Close Encounter series getting old or is Kate McKinnon funny enough to keep making it work?

Thoughts on the 3 new people, or the loss of Bayer/Moynihan/Zamata?

as for the new people, really excited to see Chris Redd in the cast now. He was one of the best parts of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping so it's already safe to say he's a funny guy

I've met Luke Null a few times around the Chicago comedy scene and he has some pretty funny songs. I expect that he'll end up doing songs on Weekend Update. Some of the backstage stuff I've heard through his friends is pretty funny.

He pitched a sketch to Ryan Gosling and Ryan just said "this must be your first day" because it wasn't a good idea.

Dive Bar was the weird one with Gosling, Mooney and Kenan in some weird jazz band. Didn't have much of a plot. Pretty terrible tbh but they had fun with it

Henrietta was Aidy Bryant dressed as a giant chicken

Fliplets was the house flipping show with Gosling as the weird 3rd triplet

Most snl recurring sketches get burned to the ground, close encounter included. Off the top of my head, i enjoy jeopardy, the girl you wish you hadnt met at a bar, and stefon, everything else has been reused to death (thank god for no more jacob)

Bayer will be missed for pretapes, Moynihan will be missed for his faces and enthusiasm, Zamata will be missed for her skin color and gender combination on the offchance shes used

hate to say it but it's kind of a good point. Leslie Jones is the only black woman left (and pretty much the only female of color left since Melissa Villasenor only ever shows up if they need a silly voice)

and Leslie Jones has pretty much proven by now that she can only play a very specific role

Right now I'm loving how well Mikey Day seems integrated into the cast already; I definitely see him sticking around a long time. They need more people that can play any role like that (and preferably some that aren't just skinny white guys)

I really liked Levis, Papyrus, and the Fliplets. Kate's talented enough to make anything work, but even so I don't want to see another Close Encounter this season.
