But that's the correct control. FFVII used it. Every MGS game before MGS4 uses it...

Counter is an ability you have to equip in the reaction ability slot. Lots of random monsters have it. There are other great reaction abilities like Auto Potion and Blade Grasp.

You could set Ramza on auto battle and just watch it happen.

I like messing with auto battle sometimes, allows the game to play itself

You can counter from any direction, including the back, but only if you have counter equipped as your reaction. Counter is actually based on your weapon range too, so if you have a gun or a bow, you'll counter-attack against other ranged weapons.

Although there's better reactions than counter imo. You don't get XP or JP for counter-attacks. Good if you're trying to keep your level low, but if you want to gain JP it sucks. My personal favorite reaction abilities are Auto potion, the ninja one that turns you invisible, and counter-flood, which lets you use geomancy against anything that damages you, no matter how far away it is.

I came into this topic to give you two warnings. One was to be aware you can press the shoulder buttons to see your generics, but you already discovered that

Two, FOR THE LOVE OF WHATEVER YOU HOLD HOLY, IF THE GAME PROMPTS YOU TO SAVE, SAVE IN A SEPARATE FILE. It's only important once, but that one time can permanently fuck you. It did me. :(

Yeah it's smart to keep separate saves. There are a couple of multi-battle story strings you have to complete and if you find yourself unprepared and saved over your only file you could have a very tough time getting out of it.

There are unique ones that join but you shouldn't wait for them. Always have generic characters that you level up as well

You start getting story related characters (excluding guest characters like Delita) in Chapter 2 I believe. They're basically like generics, but their base job is something different from Squire and they have different sprites/portraits. Some of them are really good! Also something you might not have noticed is that Ramza's Squire job is different from other Squires. He gets a couple new action abilities available as you progress through the chapters, and he has better stats and a wider selection of equipment than a standard squire. It's actually a really good class despite what you'd think from looking at the other squires.

You do eventually start getting unique units who have a basic class other than Squire. Instead, it'll be something like Engineer or Holy Knight. Unique classes with their own stat gains and modifiers and active skill abilities.

Regardless, you should still use and build up generics. If you aren't opposed to killing your generics later, you can delibrately kill them after you get a special unit you like. After the 3 count, if they aren't revived, they die permanently and their corpse will drop either a chest with some equipment they had or a soul crystal. That soul crystal, if picked up by another of your units, can teach that unit some of the skills the dead unit had learned.

It's a decent way to give your new units a head start on learning class skills.

I prefer using only generics, to be honest. Special characters, although having an amazing base job, tend to join with very little class/job points unlocked. Meanwhile, I've got a day 1 generic who has tier 4 job classes unlocked, complete with auto potion and move +2. I just can't be assed to start fresh with specials.

Also I fine tune my generics. I've camped in the soldier's office for what felt like hours before getting "ideal" generics that have good inner-party compatibility which makes things like curing spells, positive status spells (including quick), and chakra/revive far more viable and potent. Usually "high" brave of 65+ and Faith values +/-5 of their given value.

Brave affects the success rate of your reaction ability, and faith increases the potency of magic both cast by and cast on you. They can be modified (slowly) via the mediator class, if you go that route.

What birthday did you give Ramza (what's his sign?)

I mean it's not bad by any means but nothing has really wowed me so far or blown me away. Just seems like your typical strategy game. Nothing wrong with that of course, it's just that the fan base makes it out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread so idk man. I'll stick with it and see if it picks up
