Historically I've always thought that sarcasm, while possible to be funny, is usually kinda mean spirited and generally viewed as a more negative quality for someone to have. It also always seemed kinda low hanging fruit, you know?

But now like on facebook and stuff I keep seeing all these women post memes about how sarcastic they are and how great it is.

And then a lot of times someone says something and then they say they were just being sarcastic but what they said wasn't sarcasm at all.

Jane Austen at least helped to pioneer the use of sarcasm as a mark of quick wit, worldliness, politeness and good humor.

EDIT: But she's predated by Jonathan Swift, who himself is predated by Henry Fielding's Shamela.
