If youre ever filming a bank robbery scene make sure you tell the local authorities. This production crew failed to do that and it almost ended up with one of their actors being shot dead.

A police officer in Crawfordsville, Indiana, shot at actor Jeff Duff, who was wearing a balaclava, after 911 calls to say that a robbery was taking place at the Back Step Brewing Company. Duff was holding a fake gun and backing out of the building.

Police ordered him to drop the gun before firing at him. After the shot missed him and went into the building behind him, Duff shouted were filming a movie, I aint lying to you.

Fellow actor Phillip Demoret told RTV6 The bullet went by his head. It was very close. I dont want to think about it. If it had hit him, wed be having a whole different conversation. Thank goodness he wasnt.

Kodi Swank, co-owner of Montgomery County Production, released a statement: Theres lesson to be learned on both sides of the spectrum from us as a low budget movie company and from the police department on their quick reaction.

Im very grateful that the police department did their job to the best of their ability with an unknown situation.

The Crawfordsville Police Department said: The subject did not immediately comply with the officers commands and raised the gun pointing it at the officer during the September incident.

Officers later determined that the firearm was a movie prop and that the subject was part of a movie being filmed at the time of the incident. Those filming the movie had not notified authorities they would be shooting in area business and on public thoroughfares.

Reminds me of that Jackie Chan movie in London where they blew up a bus and although they told the local authorities they stupidly didn't tell anyone living there.

Now CE may not know this but London has a sad history with terrorists blowing up buses. So when thousands of people saw and heard a sudden bus explosion half of them called the police in utter horror.

Why can't film producers send a couple of guys around just to tell everyone what they are doing? Why are they so ego-centric?

yea, I heard about the story, and the guy is really lucky.

I understand that police officers need to look out for their safety, but it sucks that someone can start shooting like that with barely enough warning, though

Allegedly the actor pointed his gun at the cop's face.

It's hard to tell from the blurry video but It's understandable that if the cop thought he was doing that, you can see why he wouldn't hestitate.

That was a MAJOR oversight on the production's part.

Like, holy shit.

That was pretty dumb. A person almost died because the set didn't want to take the proper precautions.

Why didn't he drop the gun and then get on the ground to explain?

If you're told to drop "the gun" and it's a camera/phone, can you lower it instead? What if you drop it on your foot to let it land softly?

We need to start making TV cameras bright orange. If I was reporting on things like this, I would paint mine.

It does seem like the "robber" does accidentally point the gun at the cop right before the cop fires

As for that Jackie Chan blowing up the bus story, it does seem like the local authorities should have been the ones responsible for telling the locals, not the movie people. The movie people don't know how that kind of public notification stuff is normally done in every single location they go to.

What? The police force of one of the world's leading cities has to spend their resources sending cops out to tell people that they're filming a Jackie Chan movie?

What nonsense. No it's the film's responsibility.

It's such an easy thing to not be cognizant about, especially if you're relatively new to the movie making scene and are low-budget to boot. That said, it's also incredibly stupid to film a bank robbery scene and _not_ tell local law enforcement.

The Crawfordsville Police Department said: The subject did not immediately comply with the officers commands and raised the gun pointing it at the officer during the September incident.

Good old PD PR. Even when the fuck up was justifiably more in the other party's direction, you still feel the need to display your own idiocy.

when people know they aren't holding a gun, they tend to not think about how they are holding the thing that cops think is a gun. this is why in so many cases the cops say later that it was aimed at them. the guy wasn't trying to aim at them i'ts just that he was being free with how he held it cause he knew it wasn't a gun and wasn't thinking about it in those terms.

So if i wanted to actually rob a bank, could i call up the cops ahead of time and tell them its only an act for a movie and they wouldn't even bother responding?

I don't get what was idiotic about that?

Pretend it wasn't a movie and it was a robber, the guy points his gun at the cop.

The cops shooting was understandable despite nearly being tragic

Fuck, that actor is extremely lucky the cop is a a bad shot or was sending a warning shot. Either way, the actor needs to be pissed at the crew of the movie.
