As an adult, it's hard to imagine verbal being in any way comparable... but it might be different for kids who don't think they can say anything back?
Like I'm fairly sure that I'm currently being bullied at work and I could honestly not care less because I don't respect the person it's coming from. If someone says something shitty to me for no reason, they're the one who's fucked up... I'm not going to feel bad about it. If I was getting beat up at work? i imagine the people saying verbal abuse is worse mean that it's either a) more common or b) more difficult to defend against because if someone starts whaling on you it's pretty obvious to others, or you can use obvious, direct defense mechanisms --- You did indeed stab me in the back. Good to see people are not so crazy here... Physical bullying hurts. The only damage verbal bullying can do is SELF-INFLICTED.

On a technical level, I'd say physical bullying is worse, but they're both bad.
Bullying, like all abuse, damages the emotions and the psyche. Wounds heal, bones mend, but the psyche takes a lot longer to heal, and sometimes never. People like to pretend our minds are invincible but if anything they're the most vulnerable part of us. Verbal bullying and physical bullying both target the psyche - the thing about physical bullying, though, is that in addition to the psychological damage of having someone actually attack you, there's of course, the wounds to recover from. However, just because physical bullying is worse on a case-by-case basis doesn't mean that verbal bullying isn't an equivalent problem. Both should be treated seriously. Also, physical bullying is often preceded by verbal bullying anyways. --- Life is unfair by nature - People are unfair by choice. Using this as an excuse for bad behavior is worse than juvenile. ...
