Don't need a degree but obviously some teaching experience is ideal. If you can get a TEFL or TESOL certificate then it'll be super easy to find a job.

These companies pay between $15-$22/hour and you can choose your own hours (5-8 hours minimum per week depending on the company). It's not a lot of money but you don't even have to leave your bedroom to do it. I know people doing up to 30/hours per week.

Nope. Millions of Chinese kids out there looking for native English speakers to do online tutoring. There are a lot of different companies doing this and I'm personal friends with an owner of one (Canadian guy). I'm going to start working for him soon to supplement my income in my free time.

Problem with that is it requires you to know a second language. I took 5 years of mandatory second language, picked Italian, and I can remember like 0.1% of it. Learning an entire language isn't even worth $15 an hour, that's a shit load of work to be fluent just for near minimum wage.

No it doesn't. All you need to know is English. It's ESL. You basically follow a script and teach the lesson plan that was already created for you. They specifically want Native English Speakers, so as long as you're from an English speaking country and your accent is not difficult to understand then you can get a job. The TEFL course is like 3 weeks and costs around $1000 depending where you did it (I paid like $400 in Thailand).

They don't want you to be able to communicate with them in their native tongue. Subject material is usually at the correct level for the students level of education.

I personally haven't started teaching online yet but will be in the next few weeks. Just picked up a new high end PC and messaged my friend about working for him. But I do teach ESL in a Thai school. Just need to speak slowly and clearly while focusing on repetition. My students have come a really long way since I started teaching them in grade 1 last year. I currently teach Math and Science though.

There's always a catch, nothing like this is so simple.

If you can get a TEFL or TESOL certificate

The TEFL course is like 3 weeks and costs around $1000

Yep, there we go, and that's just the beginning.

If you want to teach ESL anywhere in the world you need a TEFL, TESOL or CELTA certificate. There are thousands of companies offering such courses. I took mine and it's what got me a job in a good school without a BA. It really is that simple.I know lots of expats in Thailand who make a living teaching online through these sites. They can pay in paypal or international wire transfer (and they pay the fees either way).

Check out a place like 51talk. It's one of the biggest ones in the world, pays between $15-$22/hour depending on experience and how many hours you work. All you need is a good computer, webcam, headset/mic, and a teaching certificate of any kind (easiest and cheapest being TEFL I believe).

It works. Some times you might need something translated but most of the time, especially when teaching basic esl, you can make them understand in different ways (visual, audio, etc). I'd say at least 90% of ESL teachers in Asia and South America don't speak a word of the local dialect.

Get it via paypal, never report it. It's tax free for me at least seeing as how I don't live in Canada or the US and don't have to pay taxes on outside income in Thailand.

Exactly right. And if you have some more teaching experience and schooling under your belt, you can work overseas in these places. The potential to make six figures is there.

Because you still need to be able to react to their questions and see their strengths and weaknesses. Plus parents want their kid to be taught by white English people. It's a bragging thing in Asia, shows you're wealthy.

That's still too much for me unfortunately, and that's not taking into account the additional costs of needing a good computer, webcam and headset/mic too apparently.

No matter how legit this might be, it's still the same old song and dance of me not meeting all the requirements/qualifications so I'm fucked out of a job yet again.

Too be honest, no. They might have better connections with schools around the world than other places but for the most part it won't get you a better job or a higher salary. As long as the school is accredited they don't care where you got it.

Waking up to work at 6am, especially 6am where all you need to do is crawl out of bed, throw on a shirt and sit down at your computer isn't difficult. Set alarm for 5:40am and have plenty of time to get ready. But again, the hours are by choice with most places, you could work from 8am-10am if you wanted to.

Go to sleep at a decent hour then. I use to be a night owl, still am when I can but on a work night I'm usually in bed by 10:30 now.

You could honestly do 8 hours each Saturday and Sunday night. Still around $1,000/month. Most schools just want an 8 hour commitment, the one I'll be joining is 5 but I plan on doing around 8 to start anyways.

Sign up for a reputable company then, it is that simple. I have never heard anyone complain about 51talk and I know multiple teachers who work for them. Also signing up for a company that offers their own TEFL training is likely bullshit (though they will do that for you if you're willing to move to China, they'll pay for airfare, housing and training).

I know an American woman who teaches English to students for a Chinese company. The hours are flexible and the pay is decent. However, she recently got fired when asking why she didnt get paid in full one month. She had worked with them for a few years I think. I sent a letter on her behalf in Chinese to her boss and her boss rehired her, but it definitely doesnt sound like the type of job Id go for.

13 reviews total isn't much to go on. Especially when considering competition is fierce between these agencies, it wouldn't be the first time a competitor wrote fake reviews. One friend has been doing 30 hours per week for 3 years with 51talk without an issue he said. 2 guys who hang out at the same bar as me work for them as well, had nothing but good things to say (they never tried to get me to sign up either).

Sure, some people have probably had bad experiences but it's like that with most companies, not everyone is going to be happy. It's part of why I'm signing up for my friends company, I've known the guy for nearly 5 years and know people who have worked for him so not in the least bit worried.
