Sen. Scott Wiener
We are going to end new HIV infections, and we will do so not by threatening people with state prison time, but rather by getting people to test and providing them access to care,

This is probably one of the dumbest, most backwards things I've read. So you're going to put thousands of people at risk of a debilitating disease because you don't want to "discriminate" against people who do literal harm to others? These people continue to make decisions that put the public in danger and it's fucking disgusting.

Cali's politicians haven't exactly been known for their good sense or judgment. Just look at the ferret law, or the reasoning behind it. <_<

I'm still for the idea of knowingly infecting someone being a felony, but I can understand what they're attempting to do.

But the way the law was in California, and still is in plenty of other states, it's knowingly "exposing" someone to the virus -not infecting-, which means, an HIV positive person on medication who is practically unable to transmit the disease can be charged with a felony for having unprotected sex with a partner if they didn't notify the partner of their status. It also means a vindictive ex-partner can easily lie and say they were never notified and proving otherwise can be difficult.

Keep in mind, the person has to know of their status to be charged when the vast majority of new HIV cases are caused by people who were unaware they had the disease.

These laws were written when little was known about HIV and there was little treatment for it. In some states, it's a felony for an HIV positive person to spit on someone else, even though it's impossible to transmit the virus through saliva.

Reducing it from a felony brings it in line with other treatable chronic STD's, which it should be.

I can see both sides of the story, but the main reasons for this are:

Modern medicine allows those with HIV to live longer lives and nearly eliminates the possibility of transmission, according to state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblyman Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), authors of the bill.

Well, let them get infected with HIV and see how they feel about it then.

I don't see the complaints. Aren't we for getting the government off the backs of people? Now suddenly you're arguing for more laws and regulations. What are you a fucking liberal or something? Why can't the free market sort this shit out? Next you'll be telling me that taxpayer money will be paying for testing services to reduce transmissions! Fucking communists.

What I want is for regulations to be both better defined and less headache-inducing when people look up the reasoning behind the regulations. I know it's not likely we'll ever get such a thing, but I still want it.

Also, someone please abolish Daylight Savings for good already.
