A woman heard from her long-lost brother after 60 years, and found out that hes now one of the worlds richest men. Ida Wilde and her family had taken in two Indian children, Asgar and Kulsom Patel, so they would have somewhere safe to stay during the violent Partition of India.

Asgar and Kulsom stayed with Idas family in Glasgows west end for five years, and were were treated like a brother and sister to Ida, and were taken all over Scotland on holidays. However, although Ida and Asgar were both sad to part, the kids eventually had to return to their parents in Mumbai.

Ida, now an 83-year-old great-grandmother, told the Daily Record that Asgar had sent Christmas and birthday cards for years afterwards, but they eventually lost touch because the family moved house a few times.

I got a message on my iPad asking, are you Ida Moreland? which was my maiden name, she said. He asked if I remembered us all going to Air on holiday and away to Tighnabruaich. It was like wed never been apart. It wasnt strange or awkward, and we chatted away like two old pals. He was so happy to finally find his Scottish family again.

On August 15, 1947, at the stroke of midnight, British rule in India was ended after a lengthy, bitter and bloody fight for independence. The country was split into two new nations India and Pakistan.

Millions of Muslims moved north to Pakistan, while Hindus in what had just become Pakistan largely had to uproot their lives and move to India. It remains, to this day, the largest mass migration of people in history.

The country was plunged into chaos. As many as a million people lost their lives in riots that broke out between Hindus and Muslims during this time.

As this was happening, Idas great aunt in Glasgow was running a boarding house for overseas students studying at the university. She received a call from two former lodgers to see if she could provide refuge for four of their friends children Ramzan, Atabr, Kulsom and Asgar.

Idas aunt decided that, at her age, she wasnt up to taking the children in but despite this, she found the kids shivering on her doorstep a few weeks later. Idas mother stepped in to help, and six-year-old Asgar and his big sister Kulsom, 12, went to stay with them. The older boys stayed with her aunt.

Ida said: Kulsom got homesick and wanted to go home, but Asgar would have lived here forever. He quickly became part of the family. We had a little dog called Sparkie and he loved playing with him. We also went on trips to the seaside and he loved seeing new places. It was great having them to stay and they were happy kids.

As the years went past, Asgar felt more and more at home in Glasgow even forgetting how to speak Urdu. So when Asgar and Kulsom moved back to India to join their parents, it was sad for the entire family.

We were heartbroken when he left, Ida said. For five years we had been brought up as brother and sister, and it was sad to lose him.

Asgar, now 78, is now based in Dubai, and is one of the richest men in the middle east, having built up a large logistics company. He travelled to Irvine in August to visit Ida at home, and she said that seeing him again was emotional for her.

I just couldnt believe it. Hes done so well for himself and hes still such a genuine and lovely person, she said. We chatted away for ages and he told me all about his family. He wants to fly me to Dubai to meet them and hes coming back to visit again next year.
