(WTNH) Across New England on Columbus Day, people are taking stances, vandalizing statues of Christopher Columbus.

In Connecticut alone, vandals spray-painted on or around statues in four cities and towns, including Middletown, Bridgeport, Norwalk, and in New Havens Wooster Square over the weekend.

New Haven Police stepped up patrols, manning the statue in the city to prevent any more vandalism.

I just happened to be walking my dog, came across the hoopla, and decided to check it out and saw that the statue had been defaced yet again for the second time in a couple weeks, said Alexa Benner of New Haven. It is 100 percent true, but theres no need to deface a statue like that.

A Columbus statue in Providence, R.I. was also vandalized. It was splashed with red paint along with the Communist hammer and sickle.

There have been no arrests.

Does anyone here ACTUALLY know the story of Columbus?

He was a moronic oaf, he thought the Earth was actually shaped like a pear. Even back in his day, he was openly mocked for such a claim.

He had to beg the Spanish king and queen several times to get the money needed for the voyages.

The pear shaped earth belief translated into maps he drew for his voyage to the New World to be completely inaccurate, and making the equator several thousand kilometres smaller than it actually is. It is why he swore up and down that he actually landed in India, and that the people he met were clearly Indians.

He was a weasel of a man, and his fleets brought nothing but death, disease, and famine to peoples that did nothing wrong.

The only reason Columbus' 'achievements' are still taught in schools is because his first English language autobiography in the 1920s played fast and loose with these facts. Columbus was propped up to be a hero to Italian and Spanish immigrants to the USA because they needed a distraction from their own real world problems.

The material from that autobiography made its way into school curriculums, spread as ironclad fact, and the rest is history.

I wish those vandals did more.

Yes, let's venerate a man who was either complicit or outright participated in genocide. History should only remember him as a monster, but that isn't happening.

I don't remember anyone saying "let's celebrate the fact that Columbus killed Native Americans!"

It was always about the discovery of the Americas. Yes, he wasn't the first, but his discovery was the catalyst to what led to the creation of the USA.

See, I get that. I've never once heard someone say "We celebrate Colombus because he murdered a shit ton of people."

Exactly.

And let's not also forget that Native American tribes fought and killed each other constantly, with many tribes going extinct even before Columbus actually got there. But we don't use that as an excuse to trash tribes that still exist today, and I would totally respect and understand the people in those tribes who wish to honor their historical tribal leaders, even if they did commit acts of genocide.

Most people didn't get jailed for their racism. Why was Columbus?

And lol @ getting triggered cause modern Americans don't want to worship someone only honored for his discovery in the 50s cause a bunch of Italians were desperate for a figure to venerate so they tossed darts at a dartboard and found someone.

One side wants to get rid of monuments glorifying racists/traitors

The other side, in wanting to keep those statues, has to argue some vague notion of "southern pride", stages hate rallies, invokes nazi slogans and ran down counter protesters in the street...

Can we please change Columbus Day? He does not deserve to be one of the few people to have a national holiday in this country. He was a shithead by 1492 standards, never set foot in the US and destroyed indigenous people. He's Andrew Jackson, but older and not even American. I don't care if it's a tradition now. Revisions of history are only bad if they take us farther from the truth. Our glorification of Columbus was built on bad information and lies. Like with Confederate statues, we are clarifying history, not hiding it.
