Looking at the switch, I don't feel it's usage case was designed to be, 'Sit on TV stand, play video games on TV', it was more 'portable system I can connect to TV natively'. I don't think after the switch there will be an exclusively portable system, but I think the concept of that they have pioneered will endure, and be copied by others.

I want one, and have only gotten to play my friends in portable mode. I'm probably going to have to wait for tax season to buy one. As a home console it's kinda 'meh' to me. As a portable, it is legitimately awesome, and adds the one feature I wish the PSP would of had. I would of loved to played my PSP on my TV, when I was able to, but that wasn't something Sony had thought of. I only play one game at a time, but being able to take the Switch with me when my son wants to watch something on the TV, that is something I can get behind. The Switch seems to be doing well in sales, we will see how well next month, but somehow I think Nintendo's only worry is about not having produced enough. And someone is going to try to replicate that success.

It depends on the game for me, something like Splatoon that I play for a few quick games I'll just use handheld but something like Zelda I'll usually play on the TV

The design really isn't portable, considering you can't reasonably fit it in your pocket. More generally, it's clearly a home console/portable hybrid especially since it's primarily intended to be used with a tv.

The problem with that theory is practical application. The Switch is currently a $300 system. Even when they price cut, it likely won't go down to under $200. The handheld market really thrives at far lower price points than that. Even when the 3DS went from $250 to $170, it still took time to pick-up sales and, to then attract more sales, they introduced the 2DS at $130.

Plus the Switch can't be easily carried and presumably can be easily damaged. Makes for a bad portable.

Switch is way too expensive for a portable, particularly when my tablet has a better screen and costs half as much.

Hardware wise? It's pretty much the same thing. IDK what CPU it uses but the GPU is one used in gaming tablets. Then the controllers are just Bluetooth.

Eh, Sony has basically forfeited the handheld market to Nintendo. They're fine with that for now while they're the undisputed winner of the console war.

And yes, the Switch is essentially a handheld with an HDMI out.

Marketed as a "home console first" to justify charging the same for games as the PS4/Xbone/PC.

You may use it almost exclusively as a home console, but that doesn't make it one or the other.

For it to be a true hybrid, the dock needed to have hardware to boost the Switch capabilities, but it does not, it's a $90 plastic cable organizer.
