Alright y'all. What's your favorite piece of music in video games? Mine would almost assuredly be The Final Trial, from the final stage of the original Pikmin, in 2001. If you haven't heard of Pikmin, it's about a tiny alien spaceman who crashlands on an unknown planet with a nonbreathable, highly poisonous oxygen atmosphere. In order to survive and find the various pieces of his ship, he befriends a near extinct race of tiny unintelligent plant creatures called Pikmin (think ants, or lemmings), to do his bidding in a symbiotic relationship where he helps them escape endangerment, and they help him fix his ship.

Anyway, the music of this game is largely ambient. You're on a lush planet with lots of local flora and fauna, and the music is dreamlike and peaceful. The planet is beautiful, so it's only fitting. As you progress through the game to newer areas and fight bosses with your small Pikmin militia, the music does slowly become slightly more structured, as you find areas that are clearly ruins, as you happen upon stronger and stronger enemies, and most importantly, as you grow more and more organized and proficient with your tiny army.

This all culminates in the music of the Final Trial. The music is sinister. The area you're in is dangerous, with all sorts of hazards and a quite difficult boss waiting at the end. But you've eked out a tiny existence on this planet, even in the harsh environment of the final stage, and it's reflected by a tiny march that's pretty consistent throughout the entirety of the song. The flute and snare drum persisting through the intimidating and evil parts of the piece just make you feel like you've really made it work, surviving against almost impossible odds on this oftentimes cruel planet, with your dinky little army. Strangely, a tiny two instrument march really made me feel like a badass. I just love it so much. It's great.

Yes, I did just type up basically a short essay on a song from a game from 2001. Fight me about it. Or better yet, tell me about your favorite song from a video game.

I wrote this up for a Facebook post btw. That's why I explained what pikmin was lmao
