A mother has revealed how a flesh-eating virus rotted her breast to the point that her nipple fell off.

Alicia Wertez, 37, found a lump on her breast in 2015, leading to a specialist suggesting a double mastectomy to reduce the chances of her getting breast cancer. However a week after her surgery she noticed something was not right, despite being told that she was healing well.

She was eventually told she would need another operation to clear up a possible infection, however her condition didnt improve and 38 days after her first surgery she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis a flesh-eating disease.

Alicia, who lives in Florida with husband and ten-year-old daughter, said: I was horrified every time I looked down as my breasts, especially my left one. Alicias breasts changed colour before the infection started to eat away at them. Her organs began shutting down due to the infection

Once I was finally diagnosed I was rushed down to theatre on April 10 as the infection had spread towards my lungs and in my chest muscle. Due to the infection Alicias organs started shutting down, bringing her to the brink of death.

Her breast tissue was destroyed, and her left nipple even fell off during a bandage change.

It was a nightmare as my breasts were rotting more every day, they were both purple and covered in puss filled spots, she said.

Despite feeling like she has been disfigured by the disease, Alicia says she is extremely lucky to have survived. She now hopes sharing her story will make other women aware of this type of complication.
