It wasn't the worst game in the series, but I'm more likely to suggest Master System / Game Gear releases before it.

I remember playing it when it first came out, and thinking "sure it looks cool and new but it doesn't bring anything new or exciting to the franchise"

Love it. Both version soundtracks are amazing and it holds a lot of nostalgic value for me so I can still go back and have lots of fun playing it.

For a game using only isometric sprites it's about as good of a 3D as you can get. They use the proper techniques (lifted directly from Marble Madess) in level design so you don't get lost in an area with no landmarks. And what's uncharacteristic for a Sonic game... the later levels are better than the earlier ones But it's still mediocre. --- "Salt cures Everything!"
