honestly a best man or even groomsmen in general doesnt mean much. they dont really do anything, they just kind of stand there on the altar/stage at the beginning of the ceremony and take pictures with you after the ceremony. after that their "responsibilities" are pretty much over, exact maybe if you make them do an entrance at the reception.
so no it doesnt really matter if you want to eschew a best man, it's ultimately a very minor thing that people blow out of proportion because they want to get their friends involved in everything --- A Green Butter Alt http://i.imgur.com/LhwwG.gif ... Copied to Clipboard!

go with your son.
and a lot of people consider the title of best man to be an honor, so even if it's not typical, if there's no one you wanna go with, then do your own thing --- b-bb-box ... Copied to Clipboard!

no, it's not normal.
just pick your kid (2nd marriage?) and run with it, especially if your wife* has someone she'd like as a maid of honor. I wish this was the biggest problem in my life. I can't even get married. Nor can I get a girlfriend. Nor can I get a girl to actually show up on the first date she agreed to.

The hell... They plan the bachelor party, make sure other groomsmen show up on time, carry the rings, take care of things so you have no stress, give a toast, plan the travel arrangements post reception and it's considered an honor. There's a reason people often introduce someone as this is John, he was the best man in my wedding and not this is my friend John.
