I know it can happen in World of Warcraft if the server doesn't register the fact that there's water there in time. Believe the same thing can/could happen in Minecraft, but that's way more rare nowadays.

Eh, weird shit happens in Minecraft all the time if you are playing on a server. I've suffocated in the floor and gotten caught on fire from lava that was below solid blocks before with server issues. Maybe they've patched those, though.

In Minecraft you can normally take fall damage if the water isn't deep enough. However, IIRC if you just hold jump when you hit the water, even one block deep water can save you, no matter the fall height.

I can't find anything to prove my point about Minecraft, but you at least could have explained it instead of just repeating the same assertion. It seems that at one point you could take fall damage in one-block deep water, but that was changed before I even started playing, so I don't know why I thought that

pretty much every game that has fall damage is like this. If you hit the bottom of whatever body of water you fell into, you usually die

those things generally are due to server lag, not anything to do with minecraft proper

and you don't need to hold jump, either, for one block of water to save you, it just saves you no matter what

Does that really count though? All the Water is waist deep so you aren't really hitting the water, just the ground under it.

You can't swim in all 3D GTAs, so not really. Not sure what you're talking about with Mario games either. I'm talking strictly fall damage, not drown/insta-kill stuff.

In FFXIV, in zones where you can swim, you can take damage as soon as you hit the surface of the water so long as you fall from high enough. It hurts just as much as falling that same height upon concrete, even when the water is deep enough to dive and swim below the surface.

How many times must I point out that I'm only talking about fall damage?

Also, they had swim mechanics in the first Mario. I guess what you probably meant was that you can't jump into water until 3, since all of the first game's swimming is completely underwater.

guys, the question is about fall damage. so, in some games, if you fall too far you take damage from the fall. in games that also have swimming and water, almost always the water will save you from the fall damage completely. the question is: is there a game with fall damage and water and swimming where instead of water nullifying fall damage completely, the fall damage just scales differently (which is how it works in real life) allowing you to survive longer falls, but not infinitely so.

While I can think of a few they're not the 'good' kind. In other words, they're the shitty kind of game where the programming was complete crap. But in well-designed games it's pretty rare.

No, it wasn't. It's what you were implying, and TC was asking for clarification of the implication. You said you don't need to hold jump. You did not expain why. He was asking the reason why, the answer apparently being that one block of water is enough to cussion the fall.

Which, again, you implied, but did not outright say.

No, height difference is only applied from where you leap or fall from. So, from however much health you have, one height might take 5-10% health, another about 40-50% health, and an even grater fall height will either 1) take all but one point of damage if you're not in combat, or 2) kill you instantly if you ARE in combat.

I haven't completely tested the height differences, if any, if that damage applies to the ground versus the surface of the water, but this game treats all walkable surfaces the same, so I imagine it doesn't matter if you hit the surface of water, a rooftop from a really high tower, or a ground made of the toughest concrete your mind can conjure. If you pass a certain threshold in terms of height, and you happen to be in combat then you're a floating corpse in water.
