So a guy has a stack of money to pay me and I see the 5 design from an older five(as in the large five in the top left or right corner) so this could be 1980s which is cool but meh, this design covers a large swath of years.

So he finally pays me, and I look at it and im getting extremely excited and nervous. He had to add two more things(separately) to his order just as I was about to cash him out, I was hoping he wouldnt retract his money and give me other bills. luckily he did not.

yS0V1Ls

Series 1953 B red seal United States Note.

All bills today are "federal reserve notes" which are sold by the fed at interest to the US government, US notes differ because they are created by the treasury and sold to the government at interest. they ceased production in 1971.

The wording is also different on this bill:

Federal Reserve Note: "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private"

United States Note: "This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private"

so awesome. Value? around 10-15 dollars, but these are rare no question about it. To see one at fucking wal-mart is ridiculous.

That's pretty neat. I'd keep it.

Im probably going to keep it. I am in this game to make money, so if this was super valuable I would sell it. but worth maybe 5 bucks over face value, maybe ten...i might as well keep it.

I am glad people seem to care. Its amazing what you can find. I like doing this because I "purchase" everything at face value. I would not do this if I had to pay any sort of premium, I like free.

But yeah I think it is interesting seeing the things people give up. Checking bill serial numbers, which is half of what I do(the other half checking for silver coins, then a small bit checking for things like above) is easy and in some ways feels like playing the lottery. You have the slim, slim, slim chance of making thousands off of a bill if you know what to spot.

but yeah, thanks.

Thats pretty cool. So, for 1864 the value, depending on condition in my coin book goes from 15 in poor condition to over 500 for top conditions, BUT

there is a "small motto" variety that is super valuable. the prices range in this book from 225-20,000 dollars.

Not sure how to spot one but it would be something worth looking into. 1864 two cent small motto variety.

I don't see very many rare or old money these days; mostly just an occasional foreign coin. Last week I got a coin from Hong Kong.

the best place to find foreign coins, if you are so inclined, is the return slot of a coin star machine. it will reject a lot of foreign coins and people either forget to check down there or leave them there, after all, they are coins.

This actually seems like a pretty neat thing to collect

I had no idea there was this culture of people collecting rare bills

I really dont want to collect. I want to sell to make $$$. but along the way you find things that have nice historical value or look neat but arent really worth it to resell because the money isnt there. unless you found a guy IRL and could do a fee-less transaction.

so, meh.

I'm a sucker for old bills too. I have around $100 in mixed bills all from 70's and older. I keep them in a box with all the monetary stuff my dad collected while in Europe and Africa during World War II.

my oldest bill found retail(again i dont buy these things) is a 1950 series C 20. I like older currency but its weird. i see older coins all the damn time but bills even ones from series 2006 arent extremely common.

also check yer serials folks. if you like these topics and have learned anything, check em. if you find bill number 00000001 you easily have $5,000 on your hands.
