Obviously it's not a status symbol compared to things such as Gucci clothing but, it's a status thing for middle class households.

Not really. I just paid for my renewal today in fact. And it's not like I'm rolling in money at all.
I keep mine primarily for the cheap gas, video to dvd conversion (tons of home movies on Hi8) and for my mom to go with me and buy in bulk all the groceries she needs for all the family dinners she does.

That'd be like saying a Netflix subscription is a status symbol, actually even more so than this since it's twice the price a year

A big D.

Perhaps when it was a much newer concept (10 years ago), not anymore. Now you're just mulling around with the rest of the crowd on a busy Sunday with long lines all to save a few bucks to bring home large box of toilet paper that can barely fit in your car.

I don't do the hdd storage only thing. Dvd is still the easiest to copy from (to PCs and duplicate onto other dvds) and everyone still has dvd players in my family. It's not like Costco offers anything other than that anyway.

Wasn't even a new concept 10 years ago. I remember 20-25 years ago as a kid my family would go to Sam's Club to buy all kinds of random shit. It was basically the exact same thing as Costco, with a membership card required for entry, big warehouse building, buying everything in bulk, etc. I feel like Sam's Club had even more variety than Costco does, honestly. I used to love walking by the auto parts aisles and smelling the fresh rubber smell from the stacks and stacks of new tires. :-P
