I like VIII and XII for very different reasons.

I love the story and characters of VIII, while the game mechanics are just ok.

On the other hand I love the battle system of XII but the story and characters are as bland as anything in the series

8 had me up until the orphanage.

Then I loudly said "no" and stopped playing.

It's the only FF I haven't finished to this day.

EDIT: You're definitely onto something about FFVI and FFIX though. I sat there for a good long time trying to decide between those two... and the rest weren't even close in my eyes.

VII and X are my favorites. You may be on to something.

X is my favorite while VI is my second favorite.

Of the main games, I've only ever finished X. The other games just bore me after awhile

I liked Laguna's battle theme music... but he was just every generic long-haired "cool" dude that we idolize 'til 18 (then deplore immediately after we outgrow our Catcher in the Rye phase)... and his crew is completely forgettable.

Nope, VIII and II.

If you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. Both have similar progression systems that are hated (Junctioning and Stat Levels), both have similar stories, both have hated protagonists. If you like all of those things in one game, odds are you will like it in the other.
