Not going to deny that poverty, race, and other factors can make life difficult, but to equate them to the issues trans people face is ridiculous. Not everyone faces the same set of difficulties. Black people born into black families aren't ostracized, abused, and humiliated simply for being black. This is something gays and transgenders face on a regular basis. Fathers and mothers turning their backs on their children simply for being gay. That's a different kind of struggle that others don't face, and who is to say how devastating that can be to the psyche? When you're black, or poor, or what have you, you typically have at the very least the support of your direct family. How damaging do you think it is when your own family won't support you?

So you're right, other people have struggles. Everyone has their own struggle. But not everyone's experience is the same, and not everyone can cope the same.

i did read it. i guess i just assumed it was a public one because of the opening post and it never says where the bathroom is or where the rape happened. it just says "in a bathroom" so that in conjunction with the opening post i assumed it was a public one.

if it wasn't a public one then...uh what's the point of the opening post talking about the bathroom debate?

my second question still stands. while i see no reason for the girl to lie. and am inclined to believe her...what if he didn't do anything?

Actually being bullied and the like online isn't that far off. Even more so for kids who are at school and whatnot. Of course I'm not making this into a pissing contest but some folk have it a lot worse than trans folk.

That is a point. Cyberbullying is a big deal, and also results in suicide in many cases (possibly more so than physical bullying, but I have no stats to back up that vague impression), so it shouldn't be trivialized either. That said, that's a rather ancillary point to the one he seems to be making, which is "we've all been insulted on the Internet, trans people don't have it so bad." That's dumb.

Also, the fact that the rapist is transgender is of very little consequence. The vast majority of rapists are not transgender, just as the vast majority of transgender people are not rapists.

This is awful, what happened, and that person should be punished as a rapist, not as a transgender person, and the trans community should not be punished for the actions of a single rapist.

Suppose. Even if we all get insulted for something some folk do have it a lot worse. These people are normal the minority and that's why it's such a uphill battle for them.

It kinda bugs me when some folk trivialise other peoples problems with a "we have all had that" type of comment. That's probably why I don't tell many people in real life about the shit I've been through or even discuss it with the folk I know outside of close family. People are quick to cast judgement. Even more so on the internet. I admit I'm guilty of that myself so eh.

It's generally a pretty big problem with society. People have a lot of difficulty grasping the concept that different people react to stuff differently. What traumatises one person for life may only be momentarily upsetting to another, and pretty much everyone could stand to do a better job of realizing that they can't always generalize how they'd react.

And part of those consultations is trying out new expressions of gender identity. If the therapy's being done right, the actual surgery won't happen until they're comfortable in the target sex. If you're concerned that the surgery is coming before your uncle is comfortably settled in a new identity, raise your concerns with the therapist. They may be missing out on that information (most of what they hear will be self-reported by your uncle, which isn't always a reliable source of diagnostic information), or they may be able to explain the therapy such that you have a better understanding of it and your concerns are assuaged.
