Yeah, it's definitely in the realm of mental illness. There is too much overlap for it to be merely a coincidence or reaction to external influences. I think people just don't like being categorized as having a birth defect of any sort when it's not also a disability, regardless of it obviously still being a birth defect. It's perceived as being "lesser," when really that isn't the case in civilized society, where the law of the jungle isn't a factor anymore. All most people ask of others these days is "don't be a jerk for no reason."

And is that based on talking to him and his therapist to gain a clearer understanding of his particular case and the treatment approach they're taking, or is that just you saying "this is weird and I don't like it"? Like any medical issue, you can't generalize treatment approaches that broadly, especially not from a single example. Surgery didn't save my dad's life when he had a stroke, does that mean I firmly believe in not wasting resources operating on people with hemorrhagic strokes? Of course not, because I understand why it failed in this particular case and that other, different cases may still benefit.

Everybody gets hate, in fact we're internet denizens so we have intimate knowledge of hateful shit people spew on a regular basis. They are not committing suicide vastly more because "muh feels" unless they have emotional hypersensitivity, which is undeniably a mental disorder.
