For someone who loves the Persona series but has never actually played a regular SMT game?

SMT: Nocturne is my personal favorite but the Devil Summoners are great choices as well.

I never could quite get into Digital Devil Saga but maybe it's just me, I don't know. It really seemed like they started dumbing the series down.

Nocturne is great. SMT 4 and Apocalypse are both great. The Devil Survivor games are tactics-based and also great. Digital Devil Saga is insane. Also good.

Nocturne and later are all great games on their own, pre-nocturne are very outdated. Coming from Persona, I would suggest SMTIV or Digital Devil Saga.

If you're a persona fan your standards are so low that I'm sure you'd enjoy any of them

if you want to get into the mainline series, starting with SMT3: Nocturne would be your best bet. MT1, MT2, SMT1, and SMT2 are all first person dungeon crawlers with no animation (but fantastic sprite art especially for the bosses), that haven't been translated into english officially. Although I think SMT1 has an iphone verison in english.

SMT3: Nocturne is functionally the same type of game, a dungeon crawler, but in a third person perspective and has all the same features of the previous games with a new battle system.

Mainline SMT is a bit more serious and punishing than Persona 3-5, but you as a player have much more control over combat than you do in Persona. Your team is you as the character + a number of fused demons depending on the game, as opposed to you as your fused persona + a number of characters as their set personas. So be prepared for team building being much more important in mainline SMT.

Digital Devil Saga, each character has a set demon like in persona though,

I'll would suggest Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 on PS3's PSN. Shoji Meguro made the music for them and it's fantastic, the story and characters are great, and the gameplay is pretty simple and fun (but still gets SMT hard later on). The battle party is more character focused like Persona too, unlike other SMT games where it's one guy and his demon pokemon.

They're cheap too. I think both games are like $5 each >_> But make sure you play both. They're basically 2 halves of the whole experience.

Digital Devil Saga is somehow a good bridge between Persona and main SMT series.
NDS SMT games also pretty nice, Strange Journey and Devil Survivor series if you like Tactics games.
