I knew of neogaf's existence but I didn't know exactly what it was. Was it a news site or just forums or what?

it was a forum.
it was, early on, often used as a mini news site/forum hybrid due to a couple devs using it and it being the source of a few leaks. over time that kind of thing gave users a smug arrogance that put people off and it was mostly left as just a forum with some high profile users that'd post from time to time. it was also incredibly heavy on moderation and coupled with that attitude didn't help.

Wang pretty much sums it up accurately though, he does undersell how useful of a news source it was though, tons of insiders posting anonymously there, their stuff almost always coming true. So for that I'll be sad to see it go, but in terms of general population and use as a forum it seemed like a massive shit show.

I don't get how B8ers are unaware of it solely because of this. I've never been to the site but I feel like when people talked about news and leaks here they were always linking from GAF because they had the first info.

yeah I basically knew it as a gaming news site. every so often someone on board 8 would link to a neogaf thread with pics from an upcoming game (like I think weaku's DW design dumps were often from neogaf)

It was a better game news aggregator than actual news aggregate sites. Not only because news usually reached there first, but also because niche info can get just as prominent a spot on the site as bigger games due to the nature of the forums
