Top of the Persona entries, perhaps I shouldnt be surprised that two people both tried to nominate it (although Raka gave me the Japanese title). I will admit that, for reasons I cant completely identify, it is a cut above the others. Im still not in love with MOY, but theres a certain amount of chill-ness to it, and the pure sound and rhythm of the lyrics does hold my attention. I may never be a fan of Persona music, but I can at least respect what this one is doing.

That's a lot better than I was expecting for Life is Strange credits! I love the whole soundtrack but I feel like most people would just find it boring and chuck it out in the lower-middle somewhere so I'm happy that you liked it. Though, yeah, that pause in the middle is weird. Before I rechecked it I was afraid I linked to a version that repeated itself but nope, the two halves are different, it just goes silent for some reason.

REAL 21. Little Busters! Alicemagic
Nominated by: pyresword
Have I heard it before? yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlF_G7uEleY

I dont remember liking Alicemagic whenever I was exposed to it before, but I also dont remember the song itself just the title. The actual tune has strong energy, good instrumental sound, and decent enough vocals. I normally ignore lyrics, but I would probably benefit from being able to understand the words here so the verse-chorus structure doesnt feel like the songs just looping. The bridge isnt fantastic, but the energetic vibe of the piece is what really sells this, and thats strong throughout.

okay, that was weird, but up next will be the top 20...

I said there were two really overrated songs on the list. This is the other. I can acknowledge Laytons quality, and everything about Time Travel is so smooth and chill that I certainly cant take a hammer to it, but I seem to recall this was one of the very early VGMC retirees, and quite a strong one at that, which seems a little muchor is it? Objectively, this is a really good song. Like, really good. Subjectively, I do like it, just apparently not as much as everyone else.

I don't think that song is retired. I'm not even sure it has been in a VGMC match before. There is a retired Layton song called "Theme of the Last Time Travel", though.

20. You Have to Burn the Rope Now Youre a Hero
Nominated by: Zyxyz0
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmuiwOGi5gA

NYAH is a joke song, but a pretty great one. Even if you dont play the game, which takes all of 5 minutes, the vibe of the ending song is immediately apparent. The more hilarious part about having this song at the conclusion is that it probably takes about as long to listen to it as it does to play Burn the Rope, and Im not even sure the game has any music prior to this.

Anyway, on one hand, Now Youre a Hero is not a lyrical masterpiece. On the other, its very enjoyable, and it gets into your head. If I can put Octo-Dad at 36, then seeing this at a high position shouldnt be a huge surprise.

Compare this to:
Wizball - High Score
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzQZNfoap1E

From #20 onward, I'm going to match every song with one of my own. I was surprised some people had trouble finding ending music to nominate. You Have to Burn the Rope and one other song had to fight over my silly credits tracks, so I decided to pair this with Wizball instead. Like NYAH, High Score is a little quirky, and not especially long. They also both kind of have this fake calypso thing going. The similarities probably end there, but it was an interesting way to shoehorn in a C64 track, which I suspect is older than anything anyone nominated other than maybe Mega Man 3.

19. Portal 2 Want You Gone
Nominated by: jcgamer107
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVVZaZ8yO6o

Speaking of which

The words to this wont make a whole lot of sense if you havent played Portal 2, but unlike Still Alive (Portal 1), Want You Gone has enough interesting details in the musical design to work as a standalone. Yes, its got a lot of the quirky humor that Jonathan Coulton is known for, which extends to the composition. (Oh, did you think I meant you?) Im sure it helps that the voice of GlaDOS is a former opera singer, but the strongest feature of WYG is the sound design, which hits you from the first measure with synth samples Im not even sure how to describe, and a snare drum that jumps out at all the right moments, giving McLains vocals a nice cushion to ride all the way to the finish.

Compare this to:
Sir, You Are Being Hunted ibid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cm7OmRHXgo

The obvious comparison would be to Portal 1s Still Alive, but that would be too easy. Hunted got nominated for last years VGMC and I fell in love immediately. (I was apparently the only one.) It plays after the fact, recapping a bunch of major points about the game from the POV of the main supporting character, with a fair degree of humor. Its a little ridiculous to hear this distinguished English gentleman bustin a rhyme, and the lines he spits sound pretty much like what youd expect from such a chap. I find it enjoyable to listen to even if I ignore the lyics, but even having not played SYABH, I can get a good kick out of whats happening here.

18. Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja 5 Staff Roll
Nominated by: jcgamer107
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLmvJY9v4Y

I was about to write a dedication to orochimaru_fan about how I was probably the only person who sympathized with him when his Naruto submissions to VGMC and ranking lists never did well. Then I realized he wasnt the one who nominated this. So, uh, well then

Yes, this is just a piano melody. So is To Zanarkand. Piano solos can sometimes be real duds, but at others they can be among the most amazing pieces out there. Theres a lot of emotional depth to UN5s staff roll, a disquieting dissonance that compels you to listen to it, and is never merely a piano solo.

Compare this to:
World of Goo Best of Times
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N59pW7Sbk8c

Another sad, somber piece. Narutos staff roll might be just a piano etude, whereas Best of Times is more orchestral sounding. The entire WoG soundtrack is in a similar style, and it was met with some popularity on the board for a little while. Best of Times is the stand-out track. Maybe I should have paired this with one of the Undertales since, like Tobyfox, Kyle Gabler essentially did the whole game himself, but I think the emotion synchs better with Naruto.

I didnt think wed get through the nomination period without someone marching DMG out there. Fortunately, I happen to like it, and hadnt heard it in a while. (I also expected to see Poet and the Muse, which is a very similar piece in terms of style, feel, and how it cross-references the ending of the game in a way only someone whos played it would pick up on.) I think there are some people who have listened to Ashtar Command, but this is the only work of theirs Im familiar with. For a game where the protagonist dies at the end, it suits the mood perfectly, working as a sort of requiem.

16. Daymare Cat Better
Nominated by: Simoun
Have I heard it before? No
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nWjMCEnlWU

I had absolutely no idea what Daymare Cat was, and after watching a video where someone plays the whole game in 4 minutes, Im still not sure, other than it seems to be some kind of pencil-drawn puzzle-platformer. But either the game has no sound or that guy just didnt record any, so it seems odd this game would have a song to end it which sounds professionally recorded.

And it does sound like it could be a professional song. If I happened to pop on the alternative station, I wouldnt be freaked out by hearing this. Better is driven by the tribal-y drums and the stylized vocals in the chorus. This and Further (Iji) kept riding up the list together, and at some point I let Further drop, intending to do the same here, but I hung onto it a bit longer, and then a bit longer. Better might not be my usual shtick, but its certainly a cool song and might be my best find on this project.

Compare this to:
Child of Light - Off to Sleep
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsvAyEyi9Fg

Comparing a song to Better is tricky, but even if I cant get the style precisely down, a female vocal track (in English) with a similar vibe will have to do. Couer de Pirate is a French-Canadian pop artist I was unfamiliar with before CoL, but she did the entire soundtrack for the game (albeit it was arranged by someone else for orchestra.) This is the only one Im aware of that she actually performs, and other than that she cant seem to ever pronounce her Ts, and loves to scoop up to high notes, I think its a great track.

15. Undertale Bring it in, Guys!
Nominated by: NoFun
Have I heard it before? Yes, but Ive never listened to it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdX7j0w5zj4

When it comes to evaluating Undertale, there are two kinds of people: those who have played the game and those who havent. And its not even a context thing. Its just familiarity. Bring It In is essentially a medley, bringing in a variety of leitmotifs for 90 seconds, up until it transitions to Ngahh! and Death By Glamour (which happen to be my two favorite Undertale tracks, in case anyones considering what to nominate next spring.) The DBG variation is particularly curious since its written in a different mode, in addition to being much more of a dance track and distorting the other instrumentals. The execution on each of these parts isnt as strong as the original, but its the callback thats going to appeal to Undertale players who think of their encounters with Undyne and Mettaton. What Im not necessarily sold on with BIIG, though, is the end of it, which brings back the main theme, but just leaves it hanging as a cliffhanger. Presumably its meant to transition to another piece, probably Last Goodbye, but I dont remember my UT ending music.

Compare this to:
Cloudbuilt Cloudbits
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9sNm2BHR28

I might have screwed up here. Im not really sure whats an ending track in Cloudbuilt and what isnt, since theres an add-on with extra tracks and quite a few of them sound like the ending to that. Cloudscapes and Speed is the original games ending, so pretend thats here instead if you like, but I chose Cloudbits because it has a much stronger 8-bit feel, which matches with Undertales music. It also calls back a lot of the leitmotifs in Linckes soundtrack, which gives it a medley-like quality.

14. Undertale Last Goodbye
Nominated by: NoFUN
Have I heard it before? See Bring it in, Guys!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P8V4mP5RLg

A more rocked out version of Hopes and Dreams, Last Goodbye packs a tremendous amount of energy when it isnt calling back to the stark piano of the main theme. In fact, its so vivacious that its over before you realize whats happening. You get the piano reprise and assume its going to do more than just trail off into the sunset.

Compare this to:
Gundemonium: Recollection - Every Day is (Apparently) Peaceful
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xUcD3jEpmU

From a game where the best known piece is Tuxedo Knight, I prefer both this and the title track. EVIAP is both similar and unlike Last Goodbye. Its mood is basically halfway between the Hopes and Dreams section and the piano parts, so I can understand if this connection feels forced and I wont try to persuade you.

13. Super Mario 64 Staff Roll
Nominated by: LeonhartFour
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ruqn1Lnexs

In terms of pure nostalgia, SM64 would probably go #1. Taking the song alone is a much harder prospect, as the only other track on here that might be harder to separate from my memory of the game is FFXs ending (which has story tie-ins and such.) Then again, the idea that Peach is going to reward Mario for all his trouble by baking him a cakeeh, unless thats some kind of euphemism, thats kinda weak. And since we actually see the cake, presumably it's not.

Anyway, Staff Roll is so happy and cheerful, even during the piano parts where its supposed to back off, that its impossible to dislike. Someone who isnt a fan of the typical N64 soundfont might not love it, but I dont think anyone will begrudge me for putting it top 20. If anything, theyll be asking why it isnt higher. To that, I simply say the songs not quite as amazing as my memory of playing the game. Good, certainly, but theres some tough competition at the top.

This might be the biggest snub from the nominations. Im not necessarily a huge lover of the SMW credits, but I had to give it a nod, and this seemed like the obvious place to do so. I could have also easily put the MK64 staff roll here.

12. Guilty Gear X Primal Light
Nominated by: Mac_arrowny
Have I heard it before? No
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10VevtCeeb0

Theres a slim chance this might have been the tiebreaker song for GGX during BOST1. Im not going to look that up. Im surprised Ive never otherwise encountered this piece. It might not be Still in the Dark, Holy Orders, or Awe of She, but its still a pretty great piece. Its also maybe the most positively charged energy piece anyone submitted, and doesnt sound like it would necessarily be a credits theme, although I guess I can hear it. Endings to fighting games are naturally a good bit different from other games, so I guess I dont even know what I was expecting. However, the first time I listened to this, I thought I might just rocket it to the top, with a boost for not having heard it prior, since I would like to see something unexpected go #1. I couldnt in good conscience say that I was doing that without forcing, but its definitely one of my favorites here.

Incidentally, in a second there will only be one song left that I haven't heard, which is either expected since good songs are more likely to be shared, or disappointing, depending on how you look at it.

Compare this to:
Halo 2 Epilogue

So basically, Im comparing it to Mjolnir. Yeah, theres some new age stuff at the beginning of epilogue so I can justify this as the ending music, but its mostly the guitar work that Im drawing the connection to. Even if Primal Light and Mjolnir have a different mood, it might as well be the same guitarist playing both.

I dont know what A Hat in Time is, but it just looks fun. And it sounds fun. For all the crazy, imaginative stuff thats going on in the video background, the credits theme does a wonderful job of embodying that, along with the colorful, stylized art theme the game uses. Theres not a lot to the song, as it loops and then fades, but again, the word for this entry is fun. I was entertained listening to (and watching) this. I may have to check this game out.

Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guff_k4b6cI

As soon as I read the nomination for To a New Journey, I said, Thats gonna compete for the top slot.

I fell in love with TANJ the first time I heard it, when I got it into my head to start listening through Supradarkys uploads some five or six years ago. This was his #100, and that caught my attention, because he put a thank you in the video that I stopped and read rather than just letting it go by in the background. And I realized, hey, this songs pretty damn good. I know most people will say Into the Wilderness is the track that should take top honors from the game, and I cant argue with that except to say that, well, this is a reprisal of ITW.

And Im betting tazzy knew that when he nominated it, because Ive been public about my love for TANJ in the past and helped it during the nom phase of VGMC. But as for the song not being at the top, it hurts, but I think Ive simply heard it too many times. Ive played it to death, and it just doesnt hold up to that much loving as well as a few of these other songs or Into the Wilderness.

MGS vocal pieces can be very hit (TBIYTC) or miss (Heres to You). Starsailors slow, emotional ballad is built upon the ubiquitous acoustic guitars, but its really fueled by James Walshs vocals. Funny thing is I wasnt positive it was a dude singing, and not some black lady with a deep rich voice. Either way, the soulful long tones dominate the piece up until the electric guitar interlude at the 3 minute mark infuses WTF (lol, WTF) with an intensity that carries it to the end.

I dunno who First Aid Kit is, but I was impressed this piece (other than the completely moronic expression of keep on keepin on.) If there was one piece that was in my head when I was away from listening to the list more than any other, it was this one. Probably the most obscure of my suggestions (other than maybe Wizball). I didnt have a very obvious comparison to My Silver Lining, but I think that IWR captures a lot of the same mood, even if its probably better compared to the cheesefest section of the list.

Treasure Quest is a really weird game. It was originally a puzzle contest designed to have a million dollar reward for the person who correctly solved it and sent in their written submission to the company first. But when the publisher, Sirius, bought it from the developer, they added a bunch of things. They had Terry Farrell from DS9 act out a bunch of cutscenes and voiceovers, and the company CEOs 19yo daughter, Jodie Marie Gnant, got her big chance to work with some professional musicians and record her very first album. Ive linked folks to some of the songs from the game over the years, with Prophecy being the most popular, but I Will Remember is the track I have the most attachment toward. I could sing the entire album if you wanted to listen to me recite it for 40 minutes, though.

7. Dishonored Honor For All
Nominated by: Simoun
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0NFGgl7Cqs

I took the liberty of replacing the video with one that actually had the full intro. I hope that wasnt some error related to what actually plays at the end of the game or something, but the moonlight sonata build-up is a big part of what allows the main song to thrive, while establishing the chord structure that follows.

I typically say that I ignore lyrics, which is usually a good policy when songs are in Japanese, but one of the things that pushes HFA is the rhythmic feel of the vocals, bordering on the impression you get from a skiller rapper. The chorus of the song is nothing to write home about, but the overall piece sets a great mood, and its been a pet favorite of mine for a while.

If other people can use title screen songs that also play during the epilogue, then I can, too. And I didnt have too many male vocal pieces to choose from, so I opted instead for mood.

6. Dead Rising Justified
Nominated by: Pirateking2000
Have I heard it before? No
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82L5P5DjZy0

Is this from Dead Rising or Metal Gear Rising? Because this totally sounds like its off Revengeance. Like, I had to go back and listen to A Stranger I Remain to make sure it wasnt the same performer. (Its not.)

I imagine some folks listening will thing this song is terrible. Theyre probably the same ones that hates the MGRR tracks, though. I happen to like this brand of metal. Theres probably not much more I can add to it than that, because this is all a matter of style, but Justified gets a thumbs up from me. Obviously, since it's #6.

Compare this to:
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon - Gotta Stay Fly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVx1kq0B38U

Sure, you can question the quality of the rapping, but the backing itself (which is a song on the OST) is pretty intense, and even if the guy styling over top of them is a little cheesy, theres still something pretty endearing about GSF. OTOH, like Justified, I can easily see how someone wouldnt like it, so they pair well.

5. Chrono Trigger To Far Away Times
Nominated by: Ry_Senkari
Have I heard it before? Pff, its Chrono Trigger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOEYID9tc_0

Im kinda surprised my Secret of Mana brother didnt nominate Now Flightless Wings / The Second Truth From the Left. But To Far Away Times is a much more universal track, from a much more universal game, and to that effect I just want to say: Screw Corridors of Time. This is the top song from Chrono Trigger.

Generally speaking, when you think of what an ending song should be, can you find one that fits that better than TFAT? Its basically exactly what youre expecting at the conclusion of the game: spirited, hopeful, introspective, having march-like qualities without being so sharp or militant. And of course, it calls back the main theme in a way that plays better than the main theme itself. Switching over to Memories of Green at 2:38 is an interesting choice, but an effective one, since the moving lines that support the first strain and MOG are the same. The ending is a little abrupt, rather than overly-theatric, which is my only criticism, but the one thing that has always impressed me about Mitsudas work on CT is how well the raw sound feels in every single piece, as though he managed to wring every drip of quality out of the SNES. Of course, we know thats no fluke considering the great work hes done elsewhere, especially in Chrono Cross, but TFAT is the capstone on his initial achievement.

Compare this to:
Ogre Battle - Neo-Overture
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpQniBWqSZI

You were expecting Secret of Mana? Nyet!

Aside from the early loop to fit the timing, Neo-Overture is constantly changing, and Ive always been very impressed with the sound quality the Ogre Battle team got out of the SNES. For all the great classics that we laud, this one has generally been overlookedprobably because most of the compositions arent tier 1. But the sound engineering is for the music is, and Neo-Overture does a pretty decent job of living up to it.

It's basically Super Mario Sunshine, without FLOOD, with more charm than I knew you could put in a game. In other words, incredible. I cannot recommend it enough. (It's on Steam; a console version's in the works)

You mean the Chaotic version? I jump back and forth between which one I like the most, though I think typically I prefer the English version.

Unless you mean The End of Yorha which is a rare case where I'd legitimately buy into the idea of music spoilers a bit and that kept me from picking it.

That was Theme of the Last Time Travel, not Time Travel. They sound totally different.

4. Mass Effect 2 Suicide Mission
Nominated by: PirateKing2000
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA_7fwt4dM8

I had to change out the video because the original contained a second song that doesnt play during the credits. No, the entire staff roll is occupied by Suicide Missionwhich is also the title screen, and the music played at the biggest moment of the game, and possibly everywhere else. Im pretty sure if you look at ME2s OST, it just plays Suicide Mission 13 times and calls it a day.

SM is a pretty bad-ass song, though. Its also Mycro-approved since its written in 7/8. M4 is probably better known as the ending song to a Mass Effect game, and it executes an impressive slow build over a period of four minutes, but Suicide Mission matches that accomplishment with a two minute climb into a tense lull that culminates at 2:40.

You can stop listening at 4:35. I just wanted to pick a version that showed it playing during the credits. As opposed to, yknow, everywhere else in the game.

Compare this to:
Medal of Honor: European Assault - Dogs of War
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eLVR22UBYw

Slow-building piece, swashes triumphantly with brass at the high point, has very similar sounding chords. You guys probably knew if I had an excuse to bring in Dogs of War, I would, since it topped a rank 500 list I did once. DOW is an amazing piece, and even if its a big different from Suicide Mission, I think its strong enough and has enough tie-ins to supplant M4 (the obvious choice) as the track represented here.

3. Mirrors Edge Still Alive
Nominated by: Robazoid
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TERyxFfMqDk

Not to be confused with Portals ending, obviously.

Still Alive is a really special piece of VGM. And, truthfully, Mirrors Edge was a pretty special game that went underappreciated (and maybe a pinch underexecuted.) Other than maybe if one takes exception to Miskovskys vocals, that certainly cant be said of the games main theme, which is probably more famous than the game itself in VGM circles. I know its never met with especially good reception in VGMC, but Ive nominated it several times, and would fully support it making a run. And if you dont like that, well, I cant apologize, noo~

Compare this to:
Guild Wars 2 - Fear Not This Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOMQxVtbkik

Fear Not This Night is a slightly odd choice since GW2 is an MMO, but from what I understand, theres one quest you complete that rolls the credits, and thats where this plays. Like Still Alive, FNTN seems to only strike the fancy of a portion of the board. Objectively, I think Still Alive is the better piece, but I enjoy FNTNs Little Mermaid-esque vocals and its nice to hear Jeremy Soule write something that isnt pure background music for a change. I almost didnt know he had it in him.

2. Final Fantasy X Ending Theme
Nominated by: NoFUN
Have I heard it before? Yes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67p7h6Y-Xfg

When I decided to start this topic, it was in response to remembering that this track existed. I had listened to it a few times, realized how great it was even without the actual ending of the game on-screen, and elected to do a top 100 ending & credits ranking thread. Privately, I had a hunch that if someone was wise to that and nominated Ending Theme, it was probably going to go #1.

I hate when people use the expression all the feels, but thats exactly what Ending Themes got. Every last one of them. I mean, yeah, it helps to know the songs context and recognize that some sad stuff is going on at this starts to play, or one might get impatient at the beginning. But if youve gotten past the first 1:28 and havent gotten bored, theres no turning back. Everything after that is so elegant and beautifully designed, leading into the To Zanarkand reprisal, for which an oboe is just the perfect instrument choice. The fanfare at 3:24 brings the rest of the symphony in, and culminates in the end of the theme at 4:09. The remaining 80 seconds arent really needed. They dont hurt the overall work, but you know theyre only there because the game required some extra stuff happening. 4:09s the real ending.

Compare this to:
Final Fantasy Adventure - Legend Forever
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSwruEcg-UA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2zpxusSKKY

This is simply one of my favorites, and I didnt have a good comp track, so well just pretend that the title is being applied to Tidus. (I also assumed this was going to be #1 when I did the pairing.)

FFA was literally the first non-computer game I ever owned. My parents bought me a Gameboy one Christmas, which came with Tetris, of course, but then they bought this game to go with it. Id never heard of the game, but it was Final Fantasy, so it had to be good, right? Turns out it wasnt at all what I was expecting, but I still played the ARPG to death. Legend Forever plays during what makes for a pretty touching end sequence to the first Mana game.

In case you cant handle the original Gameboy sound, the entire game had been rereleased with a fully scored soundtrack later, so you can listen to that if you prefer, but I think it lacks what makes the original great.

1. Duck Tales: Remastered Credits (The Moon)
Nominated by: Simoun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wBtsLditgY

I know there are folks who like the actual moon level or Mt Vesuvius better, but in my opinion, the credits remix is the top track on DT:R. Kaufman just sits his ass in front of a grand piano and plays the shit out of it. And puts The Moon in the part of the game where, yknow, it probably should have been in the first place.

I guess I was hoping you would have more to say about it.

I thought the comment about him playing the shit out of the piano was short and sweet. I find it interesting you thought it would win, considering I didn't know that up until I was ordering the final few.

To try to expand on it a little, The Moon as a melody is generally regarded as the #2 NES track of all time behind Wily 1/2. And that's with an NES chipset. With a recording, obviously it has a much higher ceiling.

The version in the credits initially sacrifices the circular countermelody for the heart of a lounge-style piano performance. Yeah, there are a few embellishments, but mostly that comes in the form of giving the song over to the piano. It's stretched and paused to emphasize all the key notes. In short, it basically does the opposite of what the level version does, which is hyped up on caffeine, synth samples, and a driving snare that forces the tempo. The level version, while entertaining in it's own way, misses the mark on everything that made the NES original great.

And it's not like we lose the countermelody. It plays at the very beginning. It gets called back on several occasions. Given that it's the most famous part of the song, it's fitting that it serves as the feature that stitches the different segments together. When it comes back with a second pass through the melody at 1:50, it serves as a final little end punctuation mark to say yep, the game's really over. Enjoy the last few seconds of piano before it's all gone. The tail end of the track is sweet and heartfelt, and exits on the countermelody in an emphatic, emotional send-off.

That is why I put it at #1.
