Snake and Meryl get together for a short time after Shadow Moses but Snake disappears a short while later to work with Otacon.

Yeah, I definitely prefer the Otacon ending, Meryl's death aside.

In the Meryl ending, Otacon stays behind the help Snake escape via his super hacky powers, and Snake is like dude you know you're gonna die right and Otacon is like hell yeah but then the bombing never happens. Snake asks Campbell to send a rescue party for Otacon, and they meet back up later for the lead up to MGS2.

In the Otacon ending, Meryl actually dies. Can't be canon to MGS4 because she's still alive. MGS2 wouldn't have cared but 4 tried--to a fault--to make sense of the canon.

Otacon ending made so much more sense for MGS2, even when they put the Meryl ending as canon in the previous operations synopsis.

Like, honestly, Meryl should have stayed dead. Everything about her in MGS4 was fucking awful.

This, that said there is an off hand line about Snake being "done with tomboys" in MGS2 which implied she was alive. And Kojima gave interviews at that time saying she was. But yeah the Otacon ending is superior and still makes more sense for MGS2.

Snake dumping her ass feels sad and out of step with the story of MGS1. Which again can be said about everything post MGS1

It's just like one of my Japanese animes.

It's been a while since I played MGS4, but wasn't the implication that Meryl walked out on Snake?

I mean, the fact is this was just the first dumb inconsistency that Kojima had when writing the MGS stories.

MGS had Snake as this disillusioned vet who didn't care about anything and only did what he did because he was good at it and it made him feel alive.

So what ending makes more sense?

The woman who viewed him as an actual hero dies, and he decides to be that hero to honor her along with the one guy who wants to make up for all the bad things his creations have caused.

or

He decided he was going to live a good life for this woman, she saw the real him, got sick of him, left him, then he decided to be the hero she always viewed him as with that other guy who stayed behind at the base.

I just liked the Otacon ending more cuz it feels more natural in MGS1.

-Otacon gets a lot of character development
-Gives an emotional speech about loss
-You learn about Colonel's true relationship with Meryl
-You get that neat 2001 Space Odyssey reference at the end >_>

I think the general consensus is that she left him, but yeah it was because he was such a dick that she peaced on him. However you wanna look at it, it's stupid and pointless given either ending of MGS1.

we're supposed to care about some one-sided infatuation towards a terrorist because Otacon wants to make the scene about him?

he does the same shit in MGS2&4, as well.
