Okay, I intended to post some rule changes over the weekend, but I just never got around to it. However, I have to now because I am assuming that it affects a user's FA offers.

To summarize what could be a long story, during play-testing for the creation of B8NFLL, I was aware of ways users could game and abuse the system. I kept potential rules in my back pocket as I was just going to wait and see how users would approach the league. During the first five or maybe even six seasons, it seemed like I was never going to have to implement any of these protective rules. In recent seasons though, I started seeing users try to game the system at an increasingly alarming rate. I should have nipped it in the bud when the trend started to take off, but I allowed it to continue, so I'm mostly to blame here. There doesn't seem to be any letting up by some users, so after much consideration, I have decided that there will be rule changes effective immediately.

This doesn't effect like 75-80% of the league because they don't do any of what will follow

Position Change Rules
- 0 inquiries into what X player's rating will be if they officially change to Y position
- Unlimited same-position movements (LT/LG/LE/LOLB to RT/RG/RE/ROLB and vice-versa)
- 1 true position change per season
- All position changes are binding for that season

Age Contract Limits
- Anyone over the age of 32 may not be offered a contract longer than three years or the base length of what they are asking for, whichever is longest
- Same as above but four years for anyone 31 years of age
- Same as above but five years for anyone 30 years of age

For the six users who submitted offers for R2 of free agency, I will give you until 9 PM ET tonight to PM me offer revisions if the rule changes would have caused you to make different offers.

Ah man, I hope I'm not the main culprit for those position change rules. I know I've made a few queries about that but nothing since mid last season. And most of my queries were based on my own depth chart listing out of position people above in position people making me wonder. Mine were less about gaming the system for contract purposes and more about getting playing time for players (or to cover for outgoing trades)

So we can play people out of position if we want to by adjusting the depth chart right? We just can't officially change them or know what their rating would be in that position unless we use our 1 true position change for the season?

And what about rookies coming into the team? I assume if we want to change them out of their drafted position, it counts as our one change for the year right? Would make sense, just want to make sure as a few times I had planned to draft a rookie with the full intent of immediately changing his position

EDIT: Also I assume that means we can only position change someone if we have excess at the position then? Unless we immediately sign a replacement? Since we can't position swap a second person to cover the hole

I believe the answer to this is no.

I've typed up a post in response to the roster rule - definitely a bit of an overreaction, but I don't feel like editing it down and the Bills' B8NFLL passion cannot be squelched! So I'll probably post it as is in a minute.

1. No problem with the age contract limit rules.

2. Potentially major problems with the roster positioning rules out of nowhere.

Not sure what is meant by "abuse" or "gaming the system" but I still don't know if you've changed positions for players (and am assuming now that you didn't) I drafted (there are players I would have drafted specifically for the roster breakdown if I knew I couldn't change their positions), plus I signed what amounts to a useless center during the first free agent period already without knowledge I couldn't switch him to guard for the purposes of the roster requirements.

The timing of the rule seems especially harsh knowing I'll now have to sign at least 3 extra players just to satisfy Madden 06's arbitrary roster requirements, and I know the extra LT and OLB I drafted are now essentially useless.

I also approached free agency in a specific way that I wouldn't have if I knew these rules prior to it (there are two players that come to mind I would have pursued much more aggressively if I knew about this).

If it's because it's a big timesink for you KCF to change guys' positions for us, then I can understand and support the rule, but changing o-linemen's positions because Madden demands that there be a specific number of guards, centers, and tackles is definitely not "gaming the system" (maybe I'm feeling personally called out here whether it was intended or not), nor is signing the cheapest, crappiest o-lineman out there to fulfill Madden's demands.

I guess I'll have to send two sets of instructions: one if my roster is one way, and one if it's the other or something.

I personally also think it would have been nice to get a response to repositioning requests during the past week rather than getting 0 feedback to them (meaning I previously assumed they went through and planned accordingly) until a rule change made after the second free agency deadline.

Perhaps, this is somewhat of an overreaction for the Bills because our cap space lets us be flexible here, but we'd definitely be rightfully perturbed if the game auto-signs some useless player to a long deal because arbitrary requirements must be met. And we're also a bit miffed that we didn't more aggressively pursue a specific free agent that we feel pretty confident we would have signed had we known about this rule ahead of our plans.

So, without hearing from KCF first, I would like to post my thoughts on the roster change portion:

My assumption here is that there has been an increase in people trying to see if they can get a ratings boost from their players by checking them at every position, which would not only be a hell of a lot of work for KCF, but also not really conducive to the GM experience. You can't just look at a guy in real life and say "yeah this DE would miraculously make a better OLB." So from that standpoint I get it.

However, I would think that the 0 inquiries and all changes being binding would be sufficient to curb this sort of behavior, I don't really understand why it needs to be limited to 1 per. I mean, if you want to change a player using the guidelines I listed above, it would already be a huge risk, as rarely do those types of switches (I'm talking true position switches, not just right side to left and vice versa) work out in favor of the team. All limiting the number of switches would do is limit roster flexibility, and I don't think that itself is gaming the system, as stevr mentioned. However, doing that with the intention of fishing for the highest rating for a player certainly is, and that would totally be eradicated with even the 2 guidelines I outlined.

TLDR I personally feel 0 inquiries as to what a rating would be, and all changes being final, would be sufficient to stop any game-playing, and would not screw over people like stevr who actually did pour resources into being able to swap positions. And I don't think swapping positions itself is gameplaying.

Well where it games the system is that certain positions have vastly different pay scales.

So like last season I swapped a SS to CB because he was the same rating at both. A SS gets paid vastly less money than a CB. Like my 91 rated SS was on 2.3m a year last season, I'd imagine a 91 rated CB is on like 6m+.

Now my intention wasn't to game the system with the change, it was because I had a promising young player sat behind a 91 rated player getting zero playing time. And the SS I changed (the lower rated 81 SS) was even in the final year of his contract so would get CB money next year anyway. But I could easily see how that could have massively gamed the system if I had changed the 91 rated SS and he went to 91 CB with 4 years left on his contract. That is a huge amount of cap space I'd effectively create by drastically underpaying a position.

And it's a lot easier for KCF to have 1 flat rule across the board rather than saying 'Well these positions get paid similar so I guess this change might be ok'. Unless we said position swaps had to immediately be offered new contracts but even that has issues with it I'm sure.

Maybe I'm biased and I haven't considered potential negative side effects, but I am 100% in support of Emerald's suggestion here.

I have now read Shattered's response, and perhaps he is right on that. I thought that the game would mitigate stuff like that with players holding out for higher contracts if they're underpaid - at least that's what KCF has mentioned in the past.

But anyway my 2 cents is that I'm perfectly fine with the rule changes even though the position swap rule definitely affects me. Maybe they get tweaked slightly but I am sure KCF thinks through these rules changes a lot before implementing them.

I am also very wary of making running B8NFL a shitty experience for KCF too which we saw when we all kicked up a fuss about trades last year. Running the league is a huge task for him and generally all his changes have either involved him saving large chunks of time or ensuring everybody is on fair playing field. He wouldn't implement a change he didn't feel was necessary so I'll go along with his judgment on this.

Hm, I didn't think about the cap aspect of it, that is a good point. I guess you could just sign a bunch of the lowest paid position and then swap them to other positions that make more. Even at the backup/3rd string levels that kind of savings would add up.

Not that I'm accusing anyone of this, but I would guess now that that's the kind of thing KCF is looking to prevent before it becomes an issue.

Also, since we're airing concerns, I am a bit concerned about the recent advent of "trade picks this year for picks next year" type of trade. What happens if the user who was in charge of a team when the trade happened leaves, and the team is controlled by AI? IE I trade a 1st and a 7th this year for a 1st and a 7th next year, under current rules one team would give their 1st, the other their 7th, this year. Next year, the opposite. What if in th emiddle of that, like the offseason, user b left? Is that the kind of thing KCF can enforce an AI to do?

No. The game though only cares that you have four OTs, four Gs, four DEs, and four OLBs. The side doesn't matter. Some people do like to tidy up their roster. Taking Wiki as an example, he had 3 LOLB and 1 ROLB. He recently made one of the LOLBs a ROLB I assume to make it nice and even. There's no tangible benefit to doing so, but I can certainly understand the intrinsic value of wanting two LOLBs and two ROLBs.

Yeah, you can only position change if you have an excess at a position or if you are imbalanced in one of the positions with sides. If you have 3 LE and 1 RE, you can make a LE a RE, but you cannot make that lone RE another LE.

So switching an RT to an LT doesn't count as a true position change? I would just do something like that to balance things out, like in the example you mentioned with wiki. Just confirming. I don't think I've messed with positions at all in the 3 seasons I've been a part of this league. Also didn't think of the money-related issue to swapping positions either. Regardless, da Bears are in favour of whatever KCF thinks is fair (and to not make him lose his mind by spending hours more on the league that isn't needed).

During the first five or six seasons, I probably averaged one or two requests per season to change someone's position. Never do I recall anyone asking what their rating would be. They just want to make the change to, as I mentioned in response to Eddv, tidy up the roster without any ulterior motive. Since then, I started getting requests wanting to know what a player's rating would be across seven positions. The amount of such requests have exploded and the sheer amount of time I spend on them would surprise you. In the past three seasons combined, I have probably spent as much time dealing with position change inquiries as I have spent conducting an entire live draft.

I'm 27, and I would like to continue doing B8NFLL in my 30s. Spending 3-4 hours a season dealing with inquiries for 50-ish players for hundreds of positions in which 90+% of the time, a player will see a negative, zero, or positive one point difference in overall rating is certainly not going to help with that.

You also hit on the second part in that I consider the overuse of changing positions to be lazy GMing and in some ways discourages the competitive aspect of B8NFLL and trying to be a better GM. Why pay attention to league trends or learn from your mistakes when you can just throw chump change at vets or rookies and swap positions non-stop until you get a bunch that see ratings increases that are to your liking. Only QBs, Ps, and Ks are really exempt from this, so you could conceivably field a fully-competitive team via position changes from what were originally low-rated players. Why compete with the league to go after an 86 DE during free agency when you can sign five 70-something OLBs for maybe $1 mil cap hits each and see if anyone gets a sharp boost as a DE?

Plenty of users like being a part of B8NFLL because they like being in charge of a team and seeing where it goes. Whether they have actual Super Bowl aspirations is beyond me, but that's perfectly okay with me if they don't. What I absolutely don't want to see is people who value winning a lot but try make a big part of their path to greatness come via cheap, unmerited gains via position changing.

This was a possible rule, but isn't uniformly fair and also makes things too complicated. There's only one point during the offseason when I can even change a person's contract, and the is offseason is where the overwhelming majority of position changes occur, so it would just make for one huge mess.

Holdouts are still seemingly random (other than you only see it with high-rated players) and generally you only see 3-5 per season. That's not really an effective way to potentially deal with people gaming the system for a better cap situation.

This is a major concern yes. HanOfTheNekos was once in charge of the Bills and he traded Tom Brady to the Chris' Bucs that also included receiving a future draft pick from Chris. Han left the very next season, but since it was Chris who was giving up the high pick, I could easily get the I Bills to agree to receiving a 1st round pick for QB Matt Cassel. Now if the reverse happened and Chris left but Han stayed, I think that I would basically be forced into controlling the Bucs for that next season to ensure the trade went through because the AI Bucs would not have given up a 1st for sub-70 Matt Cassel.

The recent Bills/Pats and Dolphins/49ers trades were the only other trades involving future picks after that Bills/Bucs trade, and Jukkie, Scare, stevr, and certainly myself seem like the kind of users who will be sticking around for many seasons to come. While I doubt it will ever come to this, the only solution would be for me to take over for teams to complete trades that the AI would otherwise decline to make.

Regarding position changes, I might be lenient in the event that you suffer an injury but also have roster and/or cap issues. I don't want to guarantee that I will, but I'm putting that out there as a consideration of mine. The best solution (aside from having a more flexible roster and cap situation) would be to hold off on a position change until you really need to, but I know that's not what's going to end up happening

In the first round of free agency, C Josh McNeil and RE Ryan Riddle were the most-targeted players by users (4 each).

Now I've got more flexibility with certain players. Defense isn't quite where I wanted it to be but *shrug* we'll see i guess.

Easily the most active (and successful) I've been in free agency. I thought Dockery was going to be a bidding war, glad I got him. I figured teams would try for Hall and maybe leave Lofton, which also ended up working. Finally some insurance for Dan Morgan. KCF, when are cuts due for round 3? Or we just waiting until after round 3 since it comes really soon after round 2.

The deadline to submit offers for the third and final round of free agency will be Wednesday, November 1st at 11 PM ET

If you exit free agency with any roster holes still remaining on your team, the AI will sign players for you to fill those holes.

KCF, when are cuts due for round 3? Or we just waiting until after round 3 since it comes really soon after round 2.

Not allowed because of the deadline being so short. You will have to make cuts after free agency. I intend to sim the preseason on Sunday, so you will have nearly four full days to make any changes to your roster prior to the preseason being simmed.

Meh. I'm not terribly bummed out. I was planning on moving Thompson and Hall to OLB if they signed with me but with the recent rule changes I probably would have just switched to a 3-4 if Hall signed with me.

You haven't used your position change for the season FYI.

I would have bid on both Dockery and an MLB (probably Lofton who I intended to bid on 1st round but changed to Thompson last minute) if I had put in bids pre deadline. I figured deadline was evening instead of afternoon and foolishly never checked until after I saw KCFs deadline post. I had been preoccupied all weekend by a deathly ill girlfriend who briefly passed on the illness to me too. My plan had been similar to Stan, sit the MLB at 3rd choice MLB (I play 3-4 though) and then position swap to OLB down the line if no injury cropped up

The only one I'm really disappointed in missing out on is McNeil though as I figured what I offered was actually overpaying and didn't think I'd lose out. I thought I'd be cap tight this year but actually will have a lot of space because I didn't sign dick in free agency

Yeah, McNeil was one I put in a bid on too. Though I hit on a bunch of my other ones, so it was alright.

In the past three seasons combined, I have probably spent as much time dealing with position change inquiries as I have spent conducting an entire live draft.

Spending 3-4 hours a season dealing with inquiries for 50-ish players for hundreds of positions

If it's that much of a time-sink, then yeah something has to be done. I know I've seen people in the chat ask about that stuff, but I had no idea it was that big an issue. The rules you laid out are more than fair, just be sure to add them to the Word Doc.

In the first round of free agency, C Josh McNeil and RE Ryan Riddle were the most-targeted players by users (4 each).

Glad I splurged on Riddle. After not even attempting to sign a free agent last off-season, I almost felt I had to make a splash.

Okay, the spreadsheet should be fully updated, and we have now officially left the offseason, which means I can now complete the Bills/Pats trade and do the second leg of the Dolphins/49ers trade. The 49ers/Wildcats can now re-submit their trade if they wish.

I have decided to sim the preseason the night of Monday, November 6th. This means you need to make sure that you are under the cap by then (aka cannot be in the negatives). Should you not be under the cap when I sim the preseason, then I will have to make cuts for you.
