Game makers push really far, and then they take a few steps back, and we're okay with that, because hey, at least they're not going as far as they could. Cosmetic items used to be stuff you work towards and unlock in game. You beat a game, you get alternate costumes. You unlock or buy outfits that look cool using in game money.
