Nostalgia for a time less fucked up will make people's memories of the past more fond. This is literally only because of Trump. If we had a normal GOP president, it would still be lame, but people wouldn't be viewing George W favorably all of the sudden.

He used 9/11 as a platform to launch the Cheney/Rumsfeld Project for the New American Century, a plan to basically overthrow the Middle East and replace it all with pro-American regimes who would then give us access to cheap and plentiful oil for centuries, or so they hoped.

The Bush Admin. had already been looking into regime change in Iraq before 9/11, which was not an inside job or anything, but it's absolutely true that the Bush Admin. used 9/11 as an excuse to pursue an agenda it was already looking into.
