Assassin's Creed Origins: After taking a year off, Assassin's Creed is back and... it's an open world RPG? It might not seem like the biggest change, but a shift from linear Sequences to a more open-ended quest structure should provide a nice change of pace for those tired of the old Assassin's Creed formula. This game also takes away many of the advantages of stealth in past games, so sneaking up on an enemy several levels above your player character will likely end up in your death. On the other hand, there's a bird who is essentially a drone, so, there's that.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus: At the beginning of the year, if I was to make a list of expected mainstream sources to take a hardline stance on rising far right extremist violence in America, a video game likely wouldn't be at the top. And yet here we are. While Bethesda as a publisher want to distance themselves from making any political statements, MachineGames have no such pretensions. They've been extremely transparent about how this game will explore how far right extremists use sophisticated propaganda machines to subvert and undermine American values. Who knew this would be such a timely game? Also, right, it's a game! A sequel to arguably the greatest FPSer in a decade, no less. So watch a trailer to see what you're in for, and remember: there's a lot of things you can do with a hatchet and a Nazi.
Super Mario Odyssey: Nintendo seem to have struck gold yet again on the Switch with Super Mario Odyssey. Reviews are glowing, and people who have played it remark how this captures the spirit of Super Mario 64 (and it's less fondly remembered cousin, Super Mario Sunshine) like no Mario game since, and it's easy to see why. The Galaxy and 3D games are wonderful, but lacked a sense of curiosity of their predecessors. Odyssey takes place in large hub worlds, encouraging you to use all of your abilities to explore what's on offer, and when you've reached your limit, you can possess any number of enemies and objects to reach newer heights. Also! Pauline is back, and she's a mayor! Mario has a thing for powerful women, huh?

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders: Gaijinworks, Vic Ireland's company after the shuttering of Working Designs, are back again with another Summon Night game. The last one, 5, was localized recently, and was the last physical PSP game manufactured. That came out in 2015, and just two years later this will also be one of the last physical Vita games manufactured. Yikes! I haven't kept up with this game in particular, but 5 was a neat Persona-like strategy RPG with all the trappings of PSP jRPGs. It was neat! Hopefully this one is too. And don't worry, it's on PS4 too.
Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection: I'm a bad Falcom fan. I hardly know what this game is. I know it's the second Zwei game, which, I mean, that's just great. Good titles, Falcom. This is an action RPG similar to Xanadu Next or the Ys games, but from what I understand it's a much bigger experience than those games traditionally are. It's Falcom, so it's probably good.
Steven Universe: Save the Light: The first Steven Universe game was a cute Mario RPG-like game on Mobile. This game, however, is expanded significantly. It's available on consoles, will feature voice acting, and the villain is played by Christine Baranski (!!).

Next month seems a bit light on releases, with most of them coming in the form of expanded or otherwise rereleased editions like Snipperclips: Cut It Out, Together!, Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Hitman: GOTY Edition, and Nioh: Complete Edition. It's a good thing, too, because Steam sales and GOTY talk is just around the corner...

III was rated higher than Black Flag? Isn't III the one everybody dislikes the most?

III got more retroactive criticism than during it's launch so that's probably why it scored higher.

III is secretly the last truly ambitious AC as well.

Yeah, most of the criticism about III came after the fact with the ending and Conner being bland and unlikable. If I'm not mistaken, and I could be, most people ended up preferring Haytham to Conner.

I think I may have over-Mariod this weekend. Starting to feel slightly burnt out. One of the adverse affects of having so many moons in that game is that its real easy to convince yourself to keep playing because theres always one more you can get within like 5 minutes.

Its probably doing the game a disservice, but I feel like the whole thing is just going to be a big blur by the end.

i bought detention through the halloween steam sale then proceeded to finish it in 3 hours. heard a lot of good things about it, but the setting was what really intrigued me. i don't really play a lot of horror games so this might just be my ignorance with the genre, but it's really cool to have one that directly deals with politics and also ties it into a very personal, twisted story in a way that makes sense.

it drags on a bit at the end, and it's really not the scariest thing out there, but it's disturbing in all the right ways that makes me reflect on the absolute fucked up state of the philippines right now with an alarmingly large number of people either willing to forget about our own experience with martial law or outright saying it was the most prosperous our country had been. fucking marcos apologists make me sick, and this game only makes me feel sicker over how many people (young people even!) gloss over all the torture and mass murder the philippines endured during that time. same goes for our current president. fuck duterte and his fucking war on drugs.

i got a code for wolfenstein 2, and hoo boy am i excited to kill fascists.

have to beat assassin's creed origins first though. a little over 15 hours into that game. some good stuff in there, but the combat really does feel like budget souls right now. while the stealth works for the most part, i also do feel it's lacking compared to mgsv and dishonored 2. hell, throw in shadow of mordor/war in that comparison too with its stealth mechanics. there's just not enough tools to fuck with the enemies! it is a looker though, especially compared to shadow of war which just looked bad.

and i also just borrowed death of the outsider from a friend. might get into that before i dive into wolf 2.
