It's always been a cesspool

Since when? I don't even remember this place being such a hang-out for social rejects like it is now. Add on to this the fact that people here are openly more hostile to almost anything like never before, and I can see how this place can become a haven for people who are complete weirdo's.

It (completely unsurprisingly) started going to shit when the staff decided trolling was acceptable. years later, this is what they want, apparently.

Because people, myself included, abandoned serious and honest discourse in favor of trolling and low-effort shitposting instead.

There's a lot of trolls and groups of garbage posters that just like to mess with people. They're funny when you realize how ridiculous they are and that most of them are phony af.

Nothing serious really gets posted here as far as topic creation.

Like 75% of the topics here are just lazy trolls fishing for easy responses. Politics, religion, and social issues are super easy to rile people up with. Most of the time there's no honest discussion about them here because their popular fodder for the trolling topics which always start off with an OP designed to initially trigger posters anyway. It's less about topic discussion and more about just seeing how many people you can cause to meltdown with triggering news.

It's fun when it's just a few trouble makers here known for their silly gimmicks and you get to peek in to see how mad certain reactions get, but it's downright boring as fuck when EVERYONE begins doing it for their 5 minutes of attention. And there has been a noticeable influx of it this latest year. And it's climbing...

Personally I like to see comments from the most intelligent posters here when it comes to politics and social issues, but half the time they don't bother to make a statement anymore because...oh it's another lazy troll topic dangling bait.

It's due to a philosophy on the part of moderators like Error1355, RaptorLC, and the administrators they serve which says, "We cannot ban people we know to have a negative impact on this place just for having a negative impact (or for being racist, or sexist, or incendiary, or trollish)." They adhere to the flawed opinion that "Thou shalt not moderate or suspend unless there is a post with an infraction in it commensurate with the level of the punishment that shalt be doled out." This creates an environment where bad posters are able to toe the line of what's acceptable. Good posters who aren't as well-versed in where the line lies take their bait, respond to them, and are banned. The result is a forum where there's lots of acrimony and sewage spewing back and forth, and the moderators serve at the whims of trolls rather than the good posters who would benefit from a stricter moderation policy. SBAllen has taken a page from Facebook and Twitter: do the absolute minimum, be completely amoral, and care about nothing but the bottom line and the path of least resistance. Building a positive community, stopping the spread of racism, preventing online radicalization, and other admirable goals of that nature don't have any cachet with him or the moderators; their moderator culture is already well-established, and their individual personalities simply aren't flexible enough to consider questioning the existing moderator paradigm or the reason why they're upholding a punishment system that doesn't positively serve the userbase. It doesn't help that all of this is exacerbated by our current national political moment.
