My old job made us dress business casual and it really drives home what a terrible company they are. Pretty much every other place I've applied to since has a casual dress code. It seems like nowadays it's harder to find a place that doesn't let you dress casually.

And I mean a dress code with no practical purpose, so mandatory protective clothing doesn't count

My workplace has a very loose dress code. Basically no shorts, or dirty/ratty clothes. Even then shorts are allowed on Fridays during the summer.

I think the shorts thing only came about because someone wore uncomfortably tight bicycle shorts to work once, and the VP here didn't like looking at his clearly defined twig and berries .

Couldn't they just tell that guy not to wear his bike shorts all day?

I think my old company actually had something similar happen. Well, I don't think it was bike shorts, but supposedly before I worked there they didn't really have a dress code. I guess they got mad that people were dressing too casually or something, and decided to ruin it for everyone. Pretty weak shit. Just take up the issue with whatever people are causing it, don't implement some reactionary policy that hurts hundreds of other employees

Pretty sure even Namibia has office jobs with dress codes that people complain about.

a loose dress code. but to be fair it was construction in a expanding neighborhood so residents would be seeing us when they drove or walked by. basically we could wear what we wanted as long as it didn't have anything deemed offensive on it. and while we could get away with say wearing a tank top, it was frowned upon by higher ups, they just wouldn't say anything as long as you where getting the job done to their liking. now my direct boss always gave me shit about having a beard but I refused to shave it off, I met him half way and just kept it neatly trimmed.

actually we where expected to wear company shirts, but depending on if my direct boss was pissed off with his bosses or not dictated if he made me wear it. whenever he was highly pissed with his bosses he'd actually order me to not wear company shirts.

I had one company where the area I worked in started with business casual and then moved to shirt and tie because we were reorganized to report to our corporate office and that was the corporate dress code. Eventually they went back to business casual, but it took a couple years.

Yeah, a couple jobs with strict business casual (with emphasis on business), and I've worked some with a very loose dress code.

Yes, I can think of several jobs like that with dress codes. Granted, one was in a call center which *is* a customer-facing job in one sense of the word, but the customers never see you; however, they had an absurdly strict dress code all the same.

The engineering company I am with had a very loose dress code. We had folks we basketball shorts, T-shirts, etc. On casual Friday some folks were even more casual with flip-flops and tank-tops. I think the boss/owner didn't really care so long as we got our jobs done and cause none of us drafters or engineers ever meet with the clients. Only one of our engineers might personally meet with clients and somehow he got away with basketball shorts and T-shirts.

Starting about two years ago through with new management in charge we have been asked to stop wearing certain clothing (i.e. basketball shorts, ripped jeans, etc.) and look a bit more professional. I have always been a polo shirt and cargo pants guy which is fine with company policy. But I did think tank tops and flip flops were a bit too casual. In the case of the tank top, said engineer that did that wore a shirt that was maybe one size too small and you can see his hairy belly hanging out.

Currently work for one. It doesn't bother me at all, I actually like dressing business casual (and did so before the company started enforcing a dress code).

Main reason my company started enforcing one is we often have clients visit the office and they were tired of sending out emails asking people to dress up for it.

Most office jobs are pretty lax on dress codes nowadays, even business casual is considered overdressing.

That is, unless you work in a public facing job (which the TC excluded).

Office jobs usually aren't that strict with dress codes. There's an unsaid expectation much of the time, but it's not like jobs where they specifically outline stuff (unless you're working for a temp agency or something, but technically that's a customer-facing job to the extent that your agency is the real employer and the customer/client is the company you're working at). Honestly, the graphic design gang at one of my last jobs had some of their managers showing up in t-shirts and jeans.

My office dress code is just wearing a shirt with a collar. Otherwise they don't care unless we're going to our HQ to meet with the executives.
