I haven't played Persona 2 (either one). I have played Persona 1 and it is bad. I still think P4G ultimately wins out over P5 in terms of story and characters, though I can't deny that P5's gameplay is much better.

5's gameplay is by far the best. It's not inconceivable it could pass 4 if they addressed some of the issues I have with it in the inevitable Persona 5 Crimson. Doubt it can pass 3 though without being massively overhauled.

Picked 5, but 4's characters and scenes are better. Think 5 has the better story, S.Links, and actual gameplay though. And its not like 5's characters were bad- they're mostly pretty close to 4's in likability.

Persona 4's characters feel like my friends. Persona 5's characters do not. It takes a rare kind of magic to paint video game characters as the player's actual friends, instead of just saying "You're friends."

P5 does have better gameplay but the story and cast were pretty disappointing to me.

I did have P1, but the UMD kept freezing. 5 is a huge overhaul given the amount of years between 4 and it, but the cast was disappointing and the interaction among them was mostly really weak. Also fuck whoever came up with all those phone chats. If they do another version that drastically improves the weakest parts of the game above it could possibly be first though I'm not sure they could make the cast better than 3 or 4 without completely changing some of the characters....

2 has the best plot/characters, 5 has the best gameplay.

It's really close but I love 3's theme and story (plus you always remember your first) and 5 is so fresh and unique and well executed. 4 seems less unique, less essential.

Side note: I feel like P5 is an experience I'm going to appreciate less as time goes on. Too many flaws and its strengths struggle to make up for it. I find myself wondering how much less forgiving I would be of those flaws it if it wasn't already part of a series I have a very high appreciation for.

I think it's such an intensely 2017 game that it definitely won't age well. It's even more of a period piece than like GTAV. I think that's cool in a way. In 30 years this game will be mindblowing.

I like 4 a lot too, but frankly 4's flaws in gameplay, levels and the general unfair difficulty just makes it a worse game in my eyes. Sure 4 has much better characters, but it loses in pretty every other category for me.

Yeah, I've already kinda cooled on it myself. The things it does well, it does really well and it kind of covers up the flaws while you're playing it, but when you've had time to let it sit and think back on it, the problems stand out more. I guess it's MGS4 Syndrome to a degree. It's definitely closer to 3 than to 4 for me. P4G is a borderline top 10 game for me. 3 and 5 would probably be borderline top 50ish games.

I agree that overall Persona 5 has more weaknesses than the previous 2, but man Futaba was just so good. The whole stretch leading up to and including her Palace might be my favourite story segment of any video game.

Honestly, I feel like if P5 had handled its end sequence better, I'd probably view it more favorably. I got to the end of the game on my NG+ and all I could think of was, "Yeah, this is fine, but man, P3 and P4 did this way better."

heck the last month of P3 is probably the only thing that puts it in contention with P5 for me (and the October full moon)

I already have a hard time believing it came out 6 months ago. Feels like longer and I've barely thought about it at all
