I mainly stick around for UCA, APWT, and random playthrough topics (whether I make them or follow them). However, once UCA shuts down in February, I'll be well enough into my OT fieldwork (basically six months of unpaid work). It's a good enough reason to call it quits. I tend to spend too much time lurking and posting. God only knows what it would be like not doing it. I'll probably still use GameFAQs for reviews or game help, but likely not post anymore.

Ugh...yep. That's life. Anyway, It'll be almost 15 years since I first showed up. I still remember when stupid character armies were a thing. Official Sephiroth Army for life!

What I mean by that is that some people post so prolifically on reddit that the hivemind starts to recognize their username. After that it's a cycle, since people recognize them they get more upvotes, which means their posts are more visible, which means they get more people recognizing them... and so on. This happens both reddit-wide (well-known accounts have their own fanclubs https://www.reddit.com/r/Poem_for_your_sprog/ , https://www.reddit.com/r/Shitty_Watercolour/ and host AMAs which receive thousands of comments https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/3aungz/ , https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/29nqnl/i_am_shitty_watercolour_i_went_from_painting/ ) as well as on specific boards (I can name probably the top 2-3 famous faces on each of the smaller specific-game boards I read, but not really anyone else).

This reminds me of a really freaky thing I discovered on Reddit recently.

Carl Herold was a computer programmer who 5 years ago set up a subreddit (/r/carlhprogramming/) to help people get in to computer programming through a series of youtube videos and 1-on-1 skype interactions. He was charged with 10 counts of child porn production, after it was found that he was holding his child captive and sexually assaulting/torturing him over a period of 2 years.

He was found hanged in his cell on monday night. This isn't a "rest in peace".

The strange feeling for me is that I could've legitimately watched one of his videos back when I was looking for tutorials.....but I really don't think I did.

As for Reddit communities. It really does depends on the size. You do start recognizing the same people who make comments on smaller subs that don't really have much 'fame'.

Quitting is fine. Announcing you're quitting, to the tune of 'farewell cruel internets', is not.

Better to be here 0.5% of the time and enjoy it than spend a bunch of time in a place you dislike.

If the people here on the Land The Internet Forgot don't measure up, there's plenty of other places to be.

Which I see has now become a private sub, that's when you know how mocked they are.

I sometimes saw it get it brought up like this, someone will bring up terrible subs within Reddit, someone else will bring up /r/incels, then someone who hasn't been there before will mention what a depressing place that sub is.

It's a pretty funny exchange whenever it happens.

This is one the worst memes in recent reddit.

People bring it up in like EVERY thread. Of course those people are crazy and horrible, but you can tell so much of reddit is desperately just trying to find people worse than them and convince people "see I'm not THAT bad!!!". Most people posting about how terrible incels are are maybe 10% better at best. They just finally found people worse than them, and they feel like it justifies their own shitty behavior.
