I don't think the board drives off new users so much as it doesn't give new users a reason to stay. It's like jumping into xmen comics in 2017 with no prior knowledge...it seems interesting, but you have no attachment and there's a lot you don't understand. Would any of you stay if you showed up here right now with no attachment or habit to it all? Maybe not.

Probably as much as any other message board, but I wish people wouldn't bring politics into topics that have nothing to do with them

What this means is we are 100% intolerant to the dumbass 4chan/reddit shitposting style. That's fine honestly. We have several new users who were fairly calm and stuck with the board and got acclimated.

No, I don't think it is toxic. Politics topics definitely are, but it's difficult to really get upset with them. It's always the same people on both sides arguing the same thing they have been in every other politics topic out of habit. You know exactly what to expect and that's always what it is.

Outside of that the board is really great. Like I can be annoyed with someone like MWC in a political topic then outside of that bond over anime games or whatever.

A few people are terrible in that regard though, and they tend to corrupt places they frequent. Politics topic is one of the main congregation grounds, but there are a few others that are generally bad too. Read a bit of the Hearthstone topic and you'll see it's not just politics with problems.

But yeah, still, overall the answer is no. Feel it's been getting worse the past few years though.

The consensus outside this board is that it's very cliquey, and it's kind of true. It's not the most welcoming group of people to outsiders, unlike most boards.

what? the closest any of those statements gets to bragging is "not as bad as other boards"

the internet is a place where people are assholes to each other, there are not many online spaces where you will find people being nothing but nice because people are not nice. anytime you are coming to a place to socialize with large groups of people, including literally anywhere in real life you look for this, people will be assholes to each other.

where we are disagreeing with you is that relative to the internet we are not particularly assholes, and people are not leaving this community because we are assholes. they are leaving this community because it is dead, on an old website nobody uses, full of regulars with history making it a club others feel weird about, everyone here is old and spends less time posting online, and offers virtually nothing if you aren't into endless politics arguments or ranking my sexy pokemon.

For what it's worth, I consider myself a new user to this board and probably am not particularly well-recognized here, but for the most part y'all are a perfectly fine bunch. And even some of the weirdos and jerks I'm glad are here; they give the place an extra dash of color.

at the same time, if i were advising a poster on how to avoid toxic behavior on this site, i might tell them not to play "Gaslighting, the Game"

which is a funny thing for me to say given i am a huge fan of mafia, resistance, and secret hitler in quicker formats. there's something about multi-week games that can creep into your mind even when you're not playing

It's mostly filled with like-minded individuals. It's probably unhealthy if this is your primary hangout, but if you've got a life off of the Internet (I sure don't) then you should be ok.

I'd put Board 8 probably somewhere in the middle of the toxicity scale. It's not as bad as it could be.

The board is drenched in competitiveness, which mostly seem to just be applied in good fun. But I've seen things get visceral when politics or religion are brought up. Then again, those tend to be the two universal firestorm topics, so not really unique to this board.

But yeah. Toxicity increases to about a 9/10 whenever one of those two topics are brought up.
(Probably intensified by the aforementioned competitive mindsets.)
